GTA 6 Will Let Jason and Lucia Roam Vice City Together—or Split Up

A Dazed interview details mission-time switching, social media feeds, physical changes, persistent consequences, personalized wardrobes, Rockstar's expanded team, Miami's music scene, and relationship-driven choices.

Grand Theft Auto VI will give Jason and Lucia more freedom in how they experience Vice City. A Dazed interview with Rockstar describes an open-world setup where players can stay with both protagonists or send them off to cause trouble separately. Rockstar North head of development Rob Nelson also explains how the pair can remain active within the same continuous scene.

Jason and Lucia can roam as a pair

The character-switching system will work differently from GTA 5. Players will be able to change between Jason and Lucia during missions, giving each character a chance to handle part of a job alone. They can apparently switch between the protagonists several times during one continuous scene, rather than waiting for a mission boundary or major story moment.

One example has Jason driving along a highway while Lucia sits in the passenger seat. Players can then switch to Lucia and use her in-game phone without ending the drive or abandoning the scene. The phone appears to be more than a menu prop, too: Lucia may be able to scroll through a working social-media feed while Jason handles the road.

The same flexibility applies outside missions, where the pair can remain together or split up across Leonida. The interview frames the choice as playing “as a couple” or letting Jason and Lucia go their own ways. Their Bonnie-and-Clyde-style partnership can therefore produce coordinated criminal teamwork one moment and separate chaos the next.

Criminal choices will leave marks across Leonida

Leonida is being designed to react to what Jason and Lucia do. Carrying an assault rifle through a public street will trigger immediate reactions, and criminal decisions are intended to have effects that reach beyond the moment a wanted level disappears. Public rampages should feel less like isolated events than they did in earlier games.

Cheat codes will still be available for players who want an escape hatch back to classic GTA mayhem.

Food, exercise, and sleep will affect their appearance

Jason and Lucia’s bodies will respond to how players treat them. Food can change their weight, exercise will visibly build and tone their muscles, and long stretches without sleep will affect how they look. Extended foot chases away from police and multi-day binges can also leave them visibly drained.

These systems sound less like a simple cosmetic slider and more like a set of conditions players will need to keep in mind. Rockstar has used pieces of this idea before. Red Dead Redemption 2 allowed Arthur to gain or lose weight through his diet, while GTA: San Andreas gave CJ weight and muscle changes tied to eating and working out. GTA 6 appears to be bringing those systems back with both protagonists involved.

Jason and Lucia’s wardrobes have their own identities

New screenshots show both protagonists in outfits that differ from their early promotional designs. Lucia’s red dress is identified as an archive dress by Ferruccio Tucci, while Jason wears an archive jacket and glasses by Nola. The use of in-universe designer labels points to a wardrobe system with more personality than a basic outfit menu.

Rockstar expanded its Vice City production team

Rockstar’s development operation has grown to more than twice the size it was during Red Dead Redemption 2. The studio also has an LA office focused on the pedestrian NPCs who populate the open world, along with new internal tools and production pipelines for what Rockstar describes as its most detailed and varied population of characters yet.

Research for Vice City and Leonida included conversations with ex-criminals, law enforcement officers, club promoters, gun dealers, and other people connected to the worlds being depicted. More than 50 real-world street artists helped create the murals for GTA 6’s version of Wynwood, Miami’s outdoor art-gallery district. Real race car drivers are also working on the vehicle physics, adding practical driving experience to the game’s cars.

Jason, Lucia, and Vice City’s stranger encounters

Jason is described as ex-military and a drug runner, while Lucia is an amateur fighter who has just left prison. Their backgrounds set up a partnership built around crime, but their lives will also be shaped by the people and situations they encounter across Vice City.

Those encounters will include virtual versions of “Florida Man,” the meme-like cultural figure associated with alligator wrangling, drunken antics, and car theft. It sounds like Rockstar is once again turning real-world absurdity into open-world distractions, only now with a distinctly Florida flavor.

Miami’s music scene will cover more than nightclubs

Rockstar senior vice president of narrative Ruper Humphries said the game’s music will draw heavily from Miami bass and newer Miami artists such as Kodak Black and Sexyy Red.

The interview also describes a music scene spread across house parties in Overtown, clubs such as Booby Trap on the River, and upscale South Beach venues where bottles can cost thousands of dollars. Jason and Lucia will reportedly move through those different social spaces as the story unfolds.

Player choices will reach into Jason and Lucia’s relationship

Player behavior will affect the relationship between the two protagonists. The interview says those consequences will reach deeper than Rockstar’s earlier games or their “honour” systems, suggesting that choices will influence more than a simple mission outcome or character statistic.

The exact rules for that relationship system have not been detailed, but the combination of shared free-roaming, separate activities, personal routines, and different backgrounds gives Jason and Lucia plenty of room to develop in different directions.

Rockstar’s next extended look at GTA 6 is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on August 27, 2026, before becoming available for free through the company’s online channels. The game is planned for release in November, and the presentation should provide a clearer look at how character switching, physical condition, and lasting consequences fit together once the game is shown in motion.
