The Plucky Squire Director James Turner Returns to Pokémon in a New Creative Role

Turner's credits include character design on 4 Pokémon games, art direction on Sword and Shield, and camera animation on 2003's Pokémon Colosseum.

James Turner, the director behind The Plucky Squire, has joined The Pokémon Company International as Creative Director of Pokémon Art and Design. The move brings a longtime Pokémon contributor back to the franchise after years at Game Freak and a stint co-founding one of 2024’s most visually distinctive indie studios.

Turner announced the appointment in a post, writing, “It feels great to be working in the world of Pokémon again, with a lovely group of people,” before adding, “I’m very excited about what comes next!”

James Turner’s Pokémon work began in 2003

Turner’s earliest Pokémon credit came with Pokémon Colosseum in 2003. Bulbapedia’s James Turner credits list camera animation and special-effects work for the GameCube title.

After joining Game Freak around 2009, Turner was credited as a Pokémon character designer on Pokémon Black and White, Pokémon X and Y, Pokémon Sun and Moon, and Pokémon Sword and Shield. His creature-design credits include the Vanillite family, Golett and Golurk, Phantump and Trevenant, Centiskorch, and the Sinistea evolutionary line.

Turner also designed Ultra Beasts such as Poipole, Naganadel, Buzzwole, and Guzzlord. His work stretched beyond individual Pokémon, too, covering digital movie and effects design as well as 3D map graphics for the series.

From creature design to game direction

Turner directed HarmoKnight, the 2012 Nintendo 3DS rhythm-platformer, before becoming art director for Pokémon Sword and Shield. In that position, he helped guide the visual direction of the Galar region and worked on several Gigantamax and Galarian forms.

Even after leaving Game Freak, Turner’s connection to Pokémon continued. He was credited with designing the visual appearances of Professor Sada and Professor Turo in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

A few Pokémon trading cards carry Turner’s name in The Art of Pokemon’s illustrator archive.

The Plucky Squire added a very different design chapter

Turner’s most recent work took him away from monster-catching adventures and into the storybook world of The Plucky Squire. He co-founded All Possible Futures, the studio behind the 2D-meets-3D puzzle adventure, and co-directed the game as its characters stepped beyond the pages of their book.

That project stood out for its illustrated presentation. Segmented lines helped give the characters and environments a hand-drawn appearance, while the shift between 2D pages and a 3D world became a central part of the adventure’s identity. The game was also a high point for publisher Devolver Digital in 2024.

Game Freak’s recent work has also moved beyond Pokémon’s familiar visual direction. The studio’s action RPG Beast of Reincarnation uses a more realistic art style, adding another very different project to the company’s recent output.

Turner’s announcement did not identify a specific Pokémon game or project connected to his new position. It did make one thing clear: a designer with credits spanning character work, art direction, effects, camera animation, map graphics, and cards is now helping guide the franchise’s art and design.
