World of Tanks Update 2.4 Brings Three Roles and New Matchmaking Rules to Light Tanks
The update limits teams to two light tanks from Tier VII onward and revises Field Modifications for each role.

World of Tanks Update 2.4 gives every light tank a clearer battlefield identity through three dedicated roles, role-based matchmaking, and targeted balance changes. Wargaming’s Update 2.4 overview also details new Field Modification setups and rewards for players returning after an extended break.
The light-tank changes are part of a wider update that also includes Tier XI vehicles, a new German heavy tank line, and other additions covered in our World of Tanks Update 2.4 coverage.
Every light tank now has a battlefield role
Update 2.4 places light tanks into one of three groups: Scout, Support, or Versatile. The assignments are based on each vehicle’s characteristics, battlefield performance, and overall balance, while keeping its familiar playstyle intact.
Scout vehicles focus on reconnaissance and enemy detection. Their small size, strong concealment, and mobility make them suited to spotting movements and controlling vision. Their firepower is generally more limited, so their impact comes from providing information and creating opportunities for the rest of the team.
Support light tanks give up some concealment in exchange for greater offensive potential. These vehicles are larger and less suited to competing for vision control, but their weapons, mobility, and ability to reposition let them punish exposed enemies while still contributing reconnaissance when the situation allows.
Versatile tanks sit between the two approaches. They combine dependable firepower with solid reconnaissance, allowing players to change jobs as a battle develops. They will not match a dedicated Scout at spotting or a Support vehicle’s damage output, but they offer a flexible option across different situations.
Matchmaking will compare similar light-tank roles
Light tanks will be matched against vehicles with similar battlefield roles whenever possible. The goal is to create more comparable engagements instead of placing tanks with very different strengths into the same matchup.
Wheeled vehicles will continue to face other wheeled vehicles. The exception is the Tier IX VCS 6×6 TS 90, which joins the Versatile role while its performance remains under review.
Team limits will also change from Tier VII onward. Battles will contain no more than two light tanks per team, reducing the chance of matches becoming overloaded with high-vision vehicles and giving team compositions a more consistent structure.
Field Modifications follow the new roles
Each light-tank role receives its own Field Modification setup. Scouts retain their familiar layout, but their permanent bonuses are being adjusted to support reconnaissance. Versatile and Support vehicles receive new permanent bonuses, along with revised Dual Modifications at Tier VII and Tier VIII.
When Update 2.4 changes or replaces a modification, the affected selection will be reset. Players will receive full compensation in credits for that reset.
Returning players can claim rental vehicles and other rewards
Players who have not entered battle for more than 60 days can log in to receive a returner package. The rewards include 30-day rentals of Tier VIII and Tier IX Premium vehicles, missions that award ×5 XP for a victory, Personal Reserves, two 2D styles, and 30 days of WoT Premium Account time.
The package includes the Tier IX Vz. 58 Medvěd and Tier VIII Prototipo 6 as 30-day rental options. Each vehicle comes with 30 missions that grant ×5 XP for a victory.
Players also receive two “Amber Armor” 2D styles and 30 Personal Reserves. Fifteen reserves provide +100% Combat XP for one hour, while the other 15 grant +50% credits for one hour. The 30 days of WoT Premium Account provide +50% to Combat XP, Crew XP, and credit earnings, alongside other bonuses.
