Sony still has not decided when the PS6 will launch. The Wall Street Journal reported that Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki said the next console’s release date has not been finalized.
The timing is notable because the PS5 generation is nearing its sixth year. Console generations have often lasted around six or seven years, which led many observers to treat late 2027 as the likely window for Sony’s next system. Totoki’s comment leaves that assumption open rather than confirming it.
PS6 timing is tied to discs and component costs
Sony’s plans for physical games could factor into the decision. The company has warned that newly released PlayStation games will be available digitally only from January 2028, while discs for games released before that cutoff will continue to work on disc-equipped PS5 consoles, according to the January 2028 digital-only plan. A PS6 launch after that transition could give Sony a cleaner break from the current hardware cycle, although the company has not connected the two plans publicly.
Production costs are another concern. Totoki pointed to chip and energy supplies, along with trade tensions, as conditions Sony needs to account for. Demand from generative AI has contributed to shortages and sharply higher prices for some hardware components. He described the pressure in stark terms: “We need to take some action. Otherwise, we cannot survive in this landscape.” If Sony cannot build the PS6 at a price it considers workable, waiting for costs to settle could be preferable to launching a console with an unattractive price. Totoki had also said in May that Sony had not decided the PS6’s price, and warned that memory prices could remain very high in FY 2027 because supply was expected to stay limited. Rising memory costs have already raised the possibility of a PS6 memory price wall.
Sony has more than hardware to consider
As Digital Trends noted, Sony’s business is now less centered on products such as televisions and cameras than it was when the PS5 launched. Under Totoki, the company has put more attention on entertainment and intellectual property, with games, films, and music providing most of its income.
That business mix could give Sony more room to keep the PS5 in service rather than rush its successor. The current console also has a major showcase ahead, with Grand Theft Auto VI scheduled for November 19, 2026, and Sony pitching the game as a PS5 showcase. A late-2027 PS6 launch remains possible, but the CEO’s statement confirms that Sony has not committed to it. Some analysts now expect the console to arrive in 2028, though Sony has not announced a year or a firm release window.
