Devourer Demon Hunter’s 12.1 Balance Pass Favors Void-Scarred Over Annihilator
Mastery: Monster Within lost 66% of its bonus damage during Void Metamorphosis, while all ability damage increased by 32%.

World of Warcraft Patch 12.1 is now live, and its Devourer Demon Hunter balance pass has changed the preferred build order. Void-Scarred has moved ahead of Annihilator, which took the harder hit from changes to Mastery and Collapsing Star.
The largest adjustment affects Mastery: Monster Within. Its bonus damage during Void Metamorphosis was reduced by 66%, shifting more of Devourer’s damage toward abilities used outside the transformation. Blizzard paired that reduction with a 32% increase to all ability damage, but the two builds do not benefit from that compensation equally.
Annihilator depends more heavily on Collapsing Star, so the mastery reduction affects it more severely even after Collapsing Star received a 12% damage increase. Void-Scarred gains more from the broader ability-damage buff, helping it pull ahead under the new balance setup.
Patch Notes: Devourer Demon Hunter in 12.1
The changes reduce Devourer’s burst during Void Metamorphosis while giving its regular ability damage more weight. Eradicate also took a smaller hit that affects both builds in single-target and area-of-effect situations.
- Developers’ notes: We’re reducing the scaling of Devourer’s Mastery: Monster Within to help other stats to compete and compensating with an overall ability damage buff. Between that and a few more targeted changes, we expect damage during Void Metamorphosis to be slightly reduced while damage outside of Metamorphosis is significantly increased.
- Mastery: Monster Within has been updated – Bonus damage during Void Metamorphosis reduced by 66%.
- Collapsing Star damage increased by 12%.
- Eradicate damage reduced by 6% and secondary target damage reduced by 15%.
- All ability damage increased by 32%.
With the balance changes combined with the new Season 2 tier set, the guide writers’ verdict is that Annihilator has fallen slightly behind while Void-Scarred has improved considerably. The result is not a simple damage increase across the board: Devourer loses some of its transformation burst, then gains more power through the abilities it uses outside that window.
