Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is seeing a major commercial and player-count boost after Spider-Man: Brand New Day opened in theaters on July 30. Sales prediction firm Alinea estimates that Insomniac Games’ sequel sold another 316,000 copies across PS5 and Steam in less than two weeks, generating more than $11 million in revenue.
Those figures are estimates rather than audited sales results. Alinea uses its own prediction method, and analyst Rhys Elliott shared the numbers alongside engagement data showing a clear rise around the movie’s release. Alinea’s estimate also puts the game’s lifetime sales above 18.2 million copies, with more than 92 percent coming from PS5, and lifetime revenue above $1.2 billion.
The increase appears to have come from more than the film’s popularity. Elliott’s comparison of Alinea’s platform pricing data suggests that movie hype did most of the work, although discounts that ran alongside Brand New Day and wider cultural attention also contributed. The game’s post-film performance was stronger than during earlier discount periods, and Elliott called the result “one of the clearest transmedia halo effects we’ve ever measured.” Alinea also estimates that roughly 274,000 players accessed the game through PS Plus Extra, with the estimate identifying them as first-time players. About 20 percent of the PS5 copies sold during the film window were physical editions.
Spider-Man 2 passed one million daily players
Interest reached its highest point over the past weekend. By August 10, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 had passed more than one million daily active users for the first time since its launch week, a figure Alinea puts at 2.6 times the game’s engagement before the movie arrived.
Rhys Elliott’s analysis of the Spider-Man 2 surge also points to a wider lift for Sony’s Spider-Man games. The original Marvel’s Spider-Man and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales have reportedly benefited from the same renewed interest. An earlier sign of that lift came on Steam, where Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 reached fifth place and Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered reached ninth on the global Top Sellers list after Brand New Day opened with a $927 million weekend.
The movie’s broader performance gives Sony’s entertainment divisions another reason to pay attention to the connection between its films and games. Spider-Man: Brand New Day has now passed $1.6 billion worldwide at the box office, according to The Numbers’ box office tracking. In this case, the timing was coincidental rather than the result of a coordinated game-and-film release plan.
