Henry Cavill Remains Attached to Warhammer 40,000 Movies, Games Workshop Says
Games Workshop also confirmed an animated Space Marines: Deathwatch project and an Age of Sigmar episode for Secret Level Season 2.
Henry Cavill remains involved with the planned Warhammer 40,000 cinematic universe, Games Workshop CEO Kevin Rountree confirmed in a financial report. The update puts to rest the recent uncertainty around whether the actor was still attached to the Amazon-backed project.
Rountree said Cavill has been involved “for some time,” but did not explain what role he will have in the movies. That leaves his position on the project unclear, although his continued connection to the franchise is now confirmed. Rountree also said Vertigo remains involved with the live-action project.
The report describes the Amazon project as having reached the initial-outline stage. Games Workshop said those outlines would soon lead into the script phase, according to its annual report. It also cautioned that its Amazon films and television projects “will take years to bring successfully to market,” meaning there is still no release window for the Warhammer adaptation.
The report also revealed that Mike Flanagan has joined the project and “should soon be moving on to script,” according to IGN’s report on the announcement. Flanagan is known for horror productions including The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, and Midnight Mass. He is also working on Amazon’s upcoming Carrie series and wrote the first draft of DC’s upcoming Clayface movie.
His work on Carrie gives him another connection to Amazon as he moves toward the Warhammer project. Games Workshop did not provide further production details, so the movie is still some distance from taking a clear shape publicly.
More Warhammer Projects Are in Development
Games Workshop also revealed an animated series centered on Space Marines: Deathwatch. Masters of the Air screenwriter John Orloff is writing the project, although Games Workshop did not provide further details about its story or release plans.
Games Workshop also said it was close to completing an episode for Season 2 of Amazon’s Secret Level. The anthology’s first season included a Warhammer 40,000 episode centered on Titus, but the next entry will take place in the Age of Sigmar setting instead.
