Call of Duty: DMZ will arrive alongside Modern Warfare 4 on October 23, 2026, and it looks like Activision is treating the mode as more than a side activity. The extraction shooter is being positioned as a “living sandbox” built on the beta that first appeared with Modern Warfare II in 2022.
The action will take place on Hajin, a map changed by a nuclear reactor meltdown and described as a polluted, punishing zone. Players will work with a Forward Operating Base, crafting, and a bounty system while moving through areas tied to Russia and North Korea, with a core section representing part of South Korea.
What DMZ will bring to Modern Warfare 4
The new version of DMZ will lean on fresh healing systems, more ways to work with other players, PvP-linked bounty hunting, tougher lieutenants, and a larger stash system. It will also bring back the operator system, this time with three main ways to play: Story Missions, Dynamic Operations, and Free Roam.
Story Missions will push players through a set narrative tied to Hajin’s secrets. Dynamic Operations will layer multi-step objectives that get harder as players advance, while Free Roam will let squads move through the shared world at their own pace, with both PvP and PvE threats in the mix.
The Forward Operating Base will act as a customizable home base where players can stash gear, craft items, and track missions. The mode will also feature a wanted system that draws extra attention after too many AI kills, a stealth system for quieter runs, and a weather setup that changes as the world evolves. In other words, DMZ is being built as a full live-service experience in the Modern Warfare 4 universe.
Call of Duty fans have a lot to unpack here, and DMZ sounds like it will be one of the more ambitious pieces of the package. Share your thoughts in the comments, and follow us on X, Bluesky, YouTube, Instagram.
