Todd Howard said Bethesda always planned to bring Starfield to PlayStation and expected it to happen eventually, speaking to IGN after the developer confirmed a PS5 release with new downloadable content and major updates.
The PS5 edition is scheduled to arrive on 7th April and will be offered in a few configurations: the base game will cost $50, while a complete package that includes everything released so far will be priced at $70.
Howard framed the move as a continuation of Bethesda’s long-standing relationship with Sony. He told IGN that the studio had “always wanted to do it” and that bringing Starfield to PlayStation was “a matter of time.” He added that Bethesda had remained active on PlayStation with ongoing work on titles such as Fallout 76 and Skyrim even while Starfield was not available on Sony’s hardware.
“We’ve always wanted to do it. I would say that we have a great relationship with PlayStation. We’ve been there for a long time with our games. So, I think with this one, we knew it would be a matter of time.
We’ve been working on it for a while, so we still maintained a close relationship. We’re still shipping a lot on PlayStation. People forget with Fallout 76 and its other updates and Skyrim – we had still been doing a lot of PlayStation work, even though Starfield wasn’t there. So we’re just excited to get it out there, to the audience.”
Starfield originally launched on Xbox platforms and arrived on Xbox Game Pass in 2023 after Microsoft’s acquisition of Bethesda. The game did not meet some commercial and critical expectations at launch, and that outcome helped shape Xbox’s later decision to offer more titles across multiple platforms. Bringing Starfield to PS5 follows that shift.
Bethesda has bundled the PS5 arrival with a new DLC and a set of sizable updates intended to improve the experience. Whether the port’s timing and the added content will change perceptions remains to be seen, especially compared with the studio’s earlier hits like Fallout 4 and Skyrim. The developer is betting that the expanded PlayStation audience and the new content will increase interest when the port goes live on 7th April.
