Sony Launches New Studio TeamLFG with a Live Service Game in the Works

Sony forms TeamLFG, a new PlayStation studio developing a live service team-based action game.

Sony is back in the live service game business, announcing a fresh internal studio called TeamLFG just months after reportedly cancelling two live service projects. The new studio is working on a live service title that promises team-based action and social gameplay.

Hermen Hulst, head of PlayStation Studios, revealed that TeamLFG started at Bungie and gathered talent from across the industry. The team includes veterans who have contributed to games like Destiny, Halo, League of Legends, Fortnite, Roblox, and Rec Room, alongside newer developers bringing fresh ideas.

While no big-name leads were mentioned, the studio’s vision is clear: They want players to feel a strong social connection, recognize familiar teammates, and create memorable moments together. Their goal is to build multiplayer worlds driven by action gameplay that players can master over many hours.

TeamLFG emphasized the importance of community involvement. They plan to invite players into early access playtests and stay responsive to feedback throughout the game’s lifecycle. This approach aims to keep the game evolving well beyond launch.

The announcement is notable given Sony’s recent hesitation around live service games after the costly failure of Concord, which drained hundreds of millions and years of development. Yet, successes like Helldivers 2 show that live service titles can still find an audience.

TeamLFG described their first project as a team-based action game inspired by fighting games, platformers, MOBAs, life sims, and “frog-type games,” set in a lighthearted, comedic, mythic science-fantasy universe. Eurogamer speculates this could be the MOBA-style PvP game codenamed Gummy Bears, which began at Bungie before moving to this new PlayStation studio.

It’s a bold move for Sony, signaling renewed confidence in live service games despite past setbacks. The mix of experienced developers and a focus on community-driven development might just give this project the edge it needs.
