PlayStation May Have an RDNA 5 Handheld Chip Advantage
The possibility hinges on a claim that AMD may avoid semi-custom designs for handhelds without guaranteed order volume.

PlayStation may gain a handheld chip advantage if AMD’s semi-custom economics leave Sony as the only customer prepared to guarantee enough orders for a dedicated RDNA 5 design. The claim is unconfirmed and does not establish a finalized Sony-AMD agreement or spell out what the supposed exclusivity would cover.
PlayStation has an "exclusive of sorts for RDNA5 on handhelds" Rich from DF

Rich Leadbetter’s remark came during a Patreon-only Digital Foundry Direct discussion of a recent Fortune article about a portable device. The proposed explanation centers on order volume: AMD may not devote resources to a semi-custom handheld design unless a customer can guarantee enough orders. If Sony can provide that volume, a prospective PS6 handheld could be the only portable with dedicated RDNA 5 silicon. That would not mean Sony has exclusive access to RDNA 5 itself, and the claim does not establish the chip plans for an Xbox handheld, Steam Deck 2, or other PC portables.
RDNA 5 is described as emphasizing power efficiency, ray tracing, and AI-based processing. A design tuned for a handheld could give efficiency and heat management as much weight as peak graphics output, but the claim provides no specifications or performance comparisons to show what Sony’s chip would deliver.
Sony and AMD’s work on PSSR and FSR offers context for a possible partnership, though it does not confirm this particular chip deal. Broader PS6 rumors describe a home console and portable sharing a game catalog, with RDNA 5 in the handheld. Sony has not confirmed that hardware plan.
Affordability remains part of the calculation. Sony had not set the PS6’s launch timing or price as of August, and rising component costs had raised questions about the eventual price. A custom chip might distinguish the portable, but it would not settle what buyers pay.
