XBOX Insiders will begin testing a new feature on August 31 that gives supported physical game discs access to digital benefits across the XBOX ecosystem.
XBOX outlined the plan in its XBOX Wire announcement, presenting the feature as part of its broader game preservation effort. The goal is to help players carry libraries built across multiple generations forward as hardware and distribution methods change.
How the disc-based digital entitlement works
Players will need to insert a supported disc into an XBOX One or XBOX Series X console and launch the game. From there, they can claim a digital entitlement for the title.
Once the entitlement is claimed, supported games can provide digital features such as XBOX Play Anywhere and XBOX Cloud Gaming. Availability will vary by game. The physical disc will continue to work as it did before.
XBOX said most disc-based games for XBOX One and XBOX Series X support the feature. The initial rollout will cover thousands of titles, although some games will not be included at launch. More titles will be added over time.
For now, the program is limited to XBOX Insiders, who will get the first chance to test how physical purchases carry into the platform’s digital features. Share your thoughts in the comments, and follow us on X, Bluesky, YouTube, Instagram, Steam, Telegram.
