Vitality make Grand Slam history again after Rio 2026 title run

The CS2 roster became the first team to win two ESL Grand Slam seasons, and did it in back-to-back fashion after beating Team Spirit in the IEM Rio 2026 final.

Vitality turned IEM Rio 2026 into a piece of Counter-Strike history on April 19, 2026, when the team beat Team Spirit in the grand final and locked up the ESL Grand Slam for a second time. That alone would have been enough for a headline, but this roster went a step further and claimed the milestone back-to-back, becoming the first team to ever win two Grand Slam seasons.

The result also pushes Vitality’s case in the long-running GOAT debate. With two Grand Slams now in the bank, the organization owns a stronger peak run than Astralis’ famed 2018-19 stretch, and it did so after a season that came with plenty of pressure attached.

Rio closed the book on Vitality’s Grand Slam run

Vitality’s path to the finish line was not perfectly clean. Before the playoffs even began, the team had already lost a map win streak against G2 and dropped the seeding match to Falcons, ending another streak along the way. Once the bracket started, though, the group looked like a different squad.

The run included a sweep over NAVI, a two-map win against FURIA that shut down Gabriel “FalleN” Toledo’s chance to end a home event with a trophy, and then a 3-0 final over Spirit. Mirage was the closest map of the final, and it still went to overtime before Vitality finished the job.

Vitality’s Grand Slam path was built across four ESL wins: IEM Dallas 2025, ESL Pro League Season 22, IEM Kraków 2026, and now IEM Rio 2026. That final victory completed the set and also ended any suspense around whether the team would need another event to get over the line.

Robin “ropz” Kool also made his own bit of history. ESL Counter-Strike posted on X that he became the only player to win three Grand Slam titles, pointing to his earlier run with FaZe and his current stretch with Vitality. In the same post, ESL highlighted how rare that mark is for a single player.

Marc Winther added another small detail from the event, posting on X that apEX asked him whether he was stopping the ESL Grand Slam after Rio, before he explained that the race had reset for a new season below:

That reset is because Vitality now has a chance to begin another Grand Slam chase at IEM Atlanta 2026. If the team wants to finish a third run within the year, the remaining ESL events on the calendar would be IEM Atlanta, IEM Cologne Major 2026, ESL Pro League Season 24, and IEM China 2026.

For now, though, Rio belonged to Vitality. The team sealed its place in the record books, and it did so with the sort of form that makes every opponent look one step behind.
