Valve’s Steam Machine price hits $1,049, and the company says that’s intentional
Valve says the base model reflects current parts costs, with RAM shortages and tariffs pushing its original target out of reach.

Valve has put the Steam Machine’s base price at $1,049, and the company says that figure reflects current manufacturing costs rather than a console-style subsidy. In a new report from The Verge, Valve said it does not want to sell hardware below cost because doing so “doesn’t align with our beliefs about how healthy ecosystems are built.”
That matches the Valve coder says Steam Machine will be priced near equivalent PC builds, where Pierre-Loup Griffais described the target as a price window close to a comparable DIY PC rather than a loss-leading living room box.
Valve’s own announcement on Steam says the original price goal is “no longer viable” because of RAM shortages and US tariffs, and adds that the current number reflects the component costs it locked in over the last six months.
The $1,049 figure does not include accessories, which keeps the base unit firmly in premium territory for anyone comparing it with a standard console purchase.
