World of Warcraft’s Talebound Mode Will Add 4 Roguelike Stories to Midnight

The upcoming mode will feature four stories, three new classes, a Quillgrave hub, upgrade vendors, and cosmetic rewards for use in Midnight and beyond.

World of Warcraft will add a darker kind of adventure with Talebound, a PvE roguelike action RPG mode coming with the Echoes of the Worldcore content update for Midnight. A mysterious Storyteller will pull players into repeatable, story-driven runs through four tales, where they will fight bosses, solve puzzles, collect relics, and find loot and temporary buffs before returning to the village of Quillgrave.

Talebound will support solo play and group runs. Every class can double jump, dodge, and guard, so movement and positioning will remain important alongside abilities and upgrades. An early preview of the mode is planned for the Public Test Realm sometime in October 2026.

Blizzard’s Talebound Story Trailer sets the tone for the mode’s dark storybook setting.

Talebound’s 4 stories begin in Quillgrave

Quillgrave will serve as a safe haven between adventures. The lantern-lit village will give players a place to recover before starting another tale, although the Storyteller will not allow unfinished stories to stay unfinished for long.

Each story will bring its own setting, enemies, puzzles, treasure, relics, and boss encounters. The four available tales will include the following locations and foes:

  • Darkhaven will pit players against Konrad von Sonnesheim, The Lord Marshal, and Alexandre Dozsenc, The Blood Bishop.
  • Greenthistle Wood will feature Granny Greenthumb, Witch of the Woods, Ylska Vilefang, Witch of the Wilds, and Mobog, The Giant of Greenthistle.
  • Greywake’s Expedition will tell the story of those who fell to Zzyg’th, The Hadal Tyrant, and Chathoa, The Herald from Beyond.
  • Grove of the Night Court will center on Tilywth, The Fairy Queen, and Maernok, The Nightmare King.

Collections of the stories will also be available in Quillgrave, giving players a way to revisit their tales after completing them.

Slayer, Inquisitor, and Witch bring different combat tools

Talebound’s three classes will share the same basic movement and defensive options, but their abilities will push combat in very different directions.

Slayer

The Slayer combines sword attacks with firearms and focuses on direct damage, mobility, and control.

  • Slash delivers a three-hit sequence, with the final strike dealing more damage and adding stun. Lesser enemies will flinch when attacked.
  • Explosive Shot fires a shotgun blast, with nearby enemies taking damage from multiple shots. The ability can be empowered for greater damage.
  • Minefield sends the Slayer leaping backward while throwing mines that damage and slow enemies.
  • Shrapnel Round fires projectiles that bounce between enemies.
  • Throwing Knives quickly moves the Slayer while striking nearby targets and can cancel other attacks.
  • Silver Bolt launches the Slayer into the air to hit the highest-health enemy in range.

Inquisitor

The Inquisitor uses holy attacks and fire to slow, burn, and punish enemies while staying mobile.

  • Purify is a three-hit attack sequence that grows stronger with each strike.
  • Condemn deals holy damage, slows enemies, and can be cast while moving.
  • Denounce deals more damage the longer the Inquisitor remains still.
  • Light’s Wrath places a burning sun above an enemy, damaging nearby targets.
  • Rapture surrounds enemies with flames that can be detonated on command.
  • Radiant Burst can be cast while moving and launches fire that explodes on impact.

Witch

The Witch relies on lightning, poison, summons, and moonlight to spread damage across groups of enemies.

  • Brewing Storm is a three-hit lightning attack with a stronger final strike.
  • Bubbling Cauldron summons poisonous frogs that leap toward random enemies and explode in a small area.
  • Feline Communion transforms the Witch into a cat, allowing nearby enemies to be struck by falling stars. The Witch can also use Crooked Path to blink forward during the transformation.
  • Winter Spiders sends a spider swarm forward, with a brood mother that explodes for heavy area damage.
  • Moonlight Ravens summons ravens that seek nearby targets while the Witch channels the spell on the move.
  • Thorns causes spikes to erupt beneath the two closest enemies.

Quillgrave vendors will improve future runs

Finishing or failing a run will send players back to Quillgrave, where four vendors will help prepare them for another attempt. The Arcanist will provide potions, draughts, and flasks that can appear during a tale. The Scribe will offer talents that change how abilities work, while the Outfitter will raise starting health, damage, energy, and focus.

The Antiquarian will add passive bonuses that support different ways to approach each story. Runs can also provide relics, loot, temporary buffs, and other upgrades that shape the next attempt. Together, these systems will give repeat runs a progression path beyond simply learning enemy patterns and boss attacks.

Talebound rewards extend beyond the mode

Completing Talebound content will award cosmetics and furnishings for use in Midnight and beyond, with progress connected to the main Midnight account. The reward lineup includes the Ensemble: Witch Hunter’s Shadow Attire transmog set, the Quillgrave Storyteller’s Lectern, the Quillgrave Talebound Shadowtome, and the Shadowbound Storybook mount.

The combination of repeatable stories, class abilities, talent changes, and persistent cosmetic rewards gives Talebound a progression loop that can continue after players have seen each tale once. Blizzard has not provided a final release date in the preview, but the first PTR look is expected sometime in October 2026.
