Valor Mortis Tips for Better Parries, Smarter Shots, and Amber Builds

A well-timed counter can recover health, while shots at glowing weak points refill nephto and trigger Amber effects.

Valor Mortis is available today on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, and Game Pass. One More Level’s combat and exploration advice starts with a useful principle: the sword, firearms, and nephtoglobin all feed into one another.

That loop gives each fight more than one way to turn around. Melee hits and parries build enemy posture toward a break, while shots at glowing weak points restore nephtoglobin, or nephto. Enemies often leave ammo when they die, so a well-placed shot can help power the next move without leaving you short on bullets for long.

Make every attack feed the next

Watch the posture meter and keep pressure on enemies with hits or parries. Once it breaks, follow with a heavy strike or finisher. Attacks cannot be canceled into a parry, so avoid starting a swing if you may need to defend before it finishes. On weapons that support parrying, a clean block against an attack creates an opening for a counter. A perfect dodge briefly slows time, giving you a moment to respond.

Blocking can help recover ground, too. Counter soon after a block to restore the health you lost while guarding. For firearms, save scarce ammo for glowing weak points, also called lambent blisters, and aim down sights to make those shots count. Explosive barrels carried by some enemies are another way to cause damage, while firing at red-orange nodes can open blocked routes.

Fire Transmutation adds another opening: it sets enemies ablaze, leaving them vulnerable to finishers.

Use Ambers to change your approach

Equip Ambers at a lantern, and level William to unlock more slots. Catalyst clots in your inventory can help push past the next level threshold. Some Ambers strengthen familiar tactics, while others change the cost or payoff of a move.

Marksman’s Bane lets you parry bullets, with each successful bullet parry returning a Pistol round. Volatile End makes shots at weak points cause an explosion. Butcher’s Carnage restores health with melee attacks but removes healing from Ferrofluid Flasks, trading a familiar recovery option for a more aggressive way to stay alive.

If a boss keeps winning, try changing Transmutations, firearms, or inventory items instead of repeating the same plan. Different tools can give you a new way into the fight.

Search beyond the main route

New abilities can open up areas you have already visited, so keep earlier paths in mind as William’s options grow. Villages hide shortcuts and alternate routes, and later levels use arenas with fights across different heights.

Optional areas can hold Ambers, journal pages, and echoes of the fallen that fill in the Crimson Plague’s story. Some of the strongest enemies are hidden mini-bosses, so checking corners can lead to more than extra lore. A single playthrough may not turn up every Amber.
