Three months after Directive 8020, Supermassive Games begins another job-cut consultation

The latest process could affect up to 75 colleagues, following roughly 90 cuts in February 2024 and 35 more in July 2025.

Supermassive Games has begun another redundancy consultation that could affect up to 75 employees. The move came roughly three months after Directive 8020 was released.

In a brief message on X, the studio described the process as a necessary step for the company’s sustainability. Because the consultation is still underway, the 75-person figure is not a final count of completed job losses. Supermassive also has not identified which departments could be affected.

Supermassive also said it understood the process would be difficult and that supporting the people affected would remain its priority. The studio did not say how many employees would remain after the consultation.

Supermassive faces a third round of cuts

The latest consultation marks Supermassive’s third round of cuts in less than three years. Previous rounds saw roughly 90 employees laid off in February 2024 and another 35 positions eliminated in July 2025, adding another difficult chapter for the developer behind the Dark Pictures anthology and Until Dawn. The studio had nearly 350 creators in 2023, making the latest consultation another major change for a team that has been reduced repeatedly over the past three years.

The announcement also arrives during a wider period of job losses across the games industry, where studio performance has not always protected developers from cuts. Supermassive’s latest message focused on the company’s future, but it did not provide more detail about the financial or production decisions behind the consultation.

Supermassive Games operates as a division of Nordisk Film, which is owned by Egmont Group. Egmont’s 2025 key figures reported €2.2 billion ($2.5 billion) in revenue and €140 million ($162 million) in operating profit, though those figures do not establish how the latest consultation will affect Supermassive’s individual projects or teams.
