The Viking Sagas Is Now Available for Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition

The expansion adds the Danes, Saxons, and Varangians, along with a 15-scenario Harald Hardrada campaign and a Vikings rework.

The Viking Sagas is now available for Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition on Steam, Microsoft Store, Xbox, and PlayStation 5. The expansion’s September 22 launch, previously detailed in an earlier release announcement, brings three civilizations, 15 single-player campaign scenarios, and a range of Viking-themed additions. The Age of Empires team confirmed the launch in its September 22 launch update.

Players can lead the Danes, Saxons, or Varangians, with each civilization built around its own units and technologies. The Danes favor swift longships and aggressive raids, the Saxons rely on fortified towns and durable infantry, while the Varangians combine waterways, cavalry, and mercenary warfare.

Harald Hardrada anchors the new three-campaign story. His journey crosses the fjords of Scandinavia, the streets of Constantinople, and the English battlefield of 1066 as he pursues power during the final years of the Viking Age.

The expansion also reworks the Vikings and adds the Varangian Guard, Mounted Crossbowman, and Longship as regional units. Dozens of scenario editor assets, including burnt-out buildings, expand the tools available for custom scenarios, and the update even includes flaming birds for players who want their raids to have a little more fire.
