Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Team Details the Sega Console Cars Coming in Year 2
The developers used original Dreamcast reference data and experimented with the Genesis Tower's size to bring classic hardware onto the track.

Sega consoles are getting a second life as race cars in Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds. Year Two begins later on Nov. 3, and its Sega Consoles Pack will bring machines inspired by the Genesis, Sega Saturn and Dreamcast, complete with details borrowed from their controllers.
The pack is a bonus for Season Pass Two and the Year Two Digital Deluxe Edition. Its three machines are named Genesis Tower US, SegaSaturn JP and Dreamcast EU. Season Pass Two costs $29.99 and also covers six paid crossover packs planned through 2027.
Turning consoles into race cars
Rather than simply putting wheels on the original hardware, the development team told PlayStation Blog that it adapted console colors, buttons and silhouettes into vehicle parts. Rounded forms became fenders and noses, while sharper lines found their way into hoods and body panels.
The Dreamcast machine draws on the console’s rounded design and color scheme, and its Visual Memory Unit was recreated using original reference data. Genesis and Saturn cues give the other machines a more angular look. The designs also account for the game’s front-and-rear vehicle combination system, pairing console and controller elements.
Genesis Tower US needed particular experimentation, the team said. Its recognizable stack of hardware had to fit into a racer without blocking the character or interfering with gameplay.
Duel Mode and the Year Two schedule
Year Two also includes a free Duel Mode that trades the usual 12-player race for a one-on-one contest. Racers can see their opponent’s position, items and gadgets, while a Duel Boost gauge builds over time and through item use. Four formats cover offline CPU challenges, online matchmaking, limited-time events and customizable races against friends.
For customization, the Grand Master Plate opens a seventh gadget position called the Super Slot. It strengthens the effect of a one-slot gadget placed there, and 15 new gadgets are planned for Year Two.
The Year Two crossover schedule begins with the paid Godzilla Pack on Nov. 3, alongside the planned free addition of Bayonetta. Sega’s earlier plans scheduled a larger version 2.0 update for Nov. 6, including an in-game shop for skins and rewards from past festivals.
