Resident Evil Movie Director Says Village’s Giant Baby Made Him Remove His VR Headset

Zach Cregger said the creature's chase through the game's dark doll house forced him to step away before trying again.

Zach Cregger said even his experience directing a Resident Evil movie did not prepare him for Resident Evil: Village in VR. The giant baby that stalks the game’s doll house triggered a panic attack, forcing him to remove the headset and take a break before returning to the game.

During a special Q&A event connected to a screening of the film’s first 30 minutes, Cregger described making his way through the basement, past a mannequin on an operating table and into dark passages. The deformed fetus then began chasing him, making its “mama” and “dada” sounds as it pursued him through the darkness.

Virtual reality made the encounter even harder to escape. The creature can appear behind the player, turning the act of simply looking around into part of the danger. Cregger eventually took off the headset, stepped away for a break, and planned to return after eating some candy.

There is no sign that Cregger’s movie will recreate that sequence. The trailers so far have not shown a giant baby, and the film instead follows Austin Abrams as Bryan, a medical courier delivering to Raccoon City General Hospital when an outbreak turns the job into a fight for survival. First-person shots in the trailers echo the games’ viewpoint without confirming a direct recreation of Village’s basement chase.

Cregger directs the film from a screenplay he wrote with Shay Hatten. Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, and Paul Walter Hauser also star alongside Abrams. The movie will hit theaters on September 18.

The adaptation’s connection to the games extends beyond its camera work. Bryan will begin with a pistol before gaining a shotgun and then a machine gun, part of the game-inspired progression planned for the film’s original story.
