Red Dead Redemption 2’s NPC Interaction System Began as a 2014 Prototype
Mark Tennant's early prototype became Red Dead Redemption 2's Greet or Antagonize mechanic, which Rockstar will evolve for GTA 6.

Red Dead Redemption 2’s Greet or Antagonize system began as a prototype around 2014 or 2015. Rockstar North head Rob Nelson has confirmed in an IGN interview that Grand Theft Auto VI will bring back an evolved version of the interaction system.
Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier recounted the prototype in a video following a visit to Rockstar. Mark Tennant, the studio’s vice president of animation, developed it and showed it to technical lead Phil Hooker. Hooker hesitated to bring it to Nelson, whose appetite for building out Rockstar’s game worlds could mean extra work for the team. Nelson eventually saw how far the idea could go.
In Red Dead Redemption 2, players hold L2 or LT to choose whether to greet or antagonize an NPC. The choice repurposes an input traditionally used to aim a weapon at someone or lock onto them for combat. Earlier interactions in Red Dead Redemption and GTA 5 were simpler, while the western gave NPCs a broader range of responses to the player’s choice.
GTA 6 will take the system further. Nelson pointed to overheard conversations as one example. Nearby characters may react differently when players eavesdrop, with some showing curiosity and others taking it poorly. Ordinary chatter can affect how people respond to the player, beyond the direct greet-or-antagonize choice.
