Icarus Week 257 Reworks Spelunking Around a Mining Hut

The Olympus operation cuts its ore requirements, replaces Workshop pickaxes with on-world supplies, and places Exotic rewards along the mission.

Icarus Week 257 reworks the early Olympus Spelunking Operation, replacing its heavy mining checklist with cave exploration, a mining hut to repair, and ingots to deliver back to orbit. The Week 257 Steam update also addresses softlocks that could leave players without enough ore to finish.

The earlier version could strand players when Workshop pickaxes broke or caves ran short of essential ores such as aluminum and gold. The rework removes the Workshop items in favor of on-world substitutes, reduces the total ore needed, and removes higher-tier ores from the delivery requirements. New salt, silica, and sulfur nodes outside the cave help keep the remaining objectives within reach. Titanium and platinum no longer spawn inside the cave.

Spelunking now directs players to an existing mining hut and asks them to repair it, rather than sending them into an empty mine with no signs of activity. A new loot task involving a fallen prospector, revised cave objectives, and added dialogue give the operation more to do beyond gathering ore. Exotics are also placed as discoveries during the mission instead of being added as a simple increase to the completion payout.

The changes build on the Spelunking overhaul previewed in Week 256. Week 257 also fixes a quest marker that could complete a cave objective automatically and a drop pod that could fly back into the sky after players found the hut. Caveworms, landsharks, and sandworms had also been spawning at incorrect sizes, an issue addressed in the update.

Next week, a battery-powered Workshop Lantern is planned to join the available lighting gear. Like the Workshop Flashlight, it will arrive charged and ready to use.
