GTA Online’s Half-Track Offers Cover in Tough Solo Missions

A Heavy Revolver, gas grenades, and a Cargobob round out a player-built setup, with backup plans for timed objectives and wanted levels.

A Half-track can turn a tough GTA Online solo mission into a series of short, safer runs. Clear some enemies, move up to the objective, then fall back to the vehicle before pushing again.

These are community tactics, not guaranteed rules for every mission. Treat claims about protection, enemy behavior, and equipment availability as player advice, especially when a job has its own restrictions.

Build your loadout around the Half-track

The recommended basic kit is a Half-track, Heavy Revolver, gas grenades, and a Cargobob. If you are still building your garage, prioritize the Half-track and revolver, stock up on gas grenades, and add the Cargobob when you can. An Akula with gas bombs, Khanjali, Thruster, and Speedo Custom are later additions, not requirements for the core approach.

Set the Half-track as your personal vehicle before starting a hard mission. The advice favors medium armor because it lets you shoot from the sides, while heavy armor prevents that. The player describes the vehicle’s front, rear, and roof as bulletproof, so try to keep enemies from firing at its sides.

Once you have cleared enough enemies, reverse close to the objective, collect what you need, and retreat to the Half-track before making another run. Use the vehicle as cover while you recover and refresh armor or snacks. A Heavy Revolver can help with distant targets and Buzzards. If you cannot hit a Buzzard’s pilot, the advice recommends aiming at its tail, where two shots may bring it down.

Use gas grenades to control groups

Gas grenades are the suggested way to deal with enemies clustered in a yard. If the area has a roof you can reach, use a Cargobob to lift the Half-track onto it, then throw grenades from cover. The player says the gas does not damage goods, can get past armor, and disrupts enemy aim.

Inside buildings, aim low so the grenades bounce away from you. When enemies flank both sides, proximity mines can cover one approach while you focus on the other. Some missions disable mines, though the advice says the Half-track remains available.

Save time during scripted mission sections

Not every section requires a full enemy clear. If the objective is to survive for a set time, focus on staying alive instead of spending ammunition on every opponent. Keep an AP Pistol ready, with the armor and snacks menu accessible for quick use.

When a mission requires you to carry something with the Cargobob, climb high before flying toward the objective. The suggested route uses that time to build forward momentum, while enemy Buzzards may take a while to arrive.

Keep an escape route ready

If police are part of the job, one suggested tactic is to let the wanted level begin, then take the Cargobob high enough for it to clear before descending. When you cannot reach the Half-track, the fallback is to call Lester for a helicopter, climb toward the height limit, then parachute onto a rooftop near the destination.

Water can provide another retreat when Buzzards are the main threat. If you have a scuba outfit, run to the water and dive deep before they can keep firing. The player also suggests exiting a Kraken underwater to equip scuba gear, then saving that outfit for later.

For difficult freemode missions, an RC Bandito can scout a location or attack a powerful enemy while you stay hidden. In one narrower situation, the advice for a pair of Mesa SUVs is to take out the passenger in one vehicle and leave its driver alive, which the player says limits incoming damage and stops another pair from appearing.
