Gears of War: E-Day Campaign Preview Reconnects With the Series’ Brutal Roots

A hands-on look at Act 2 follows Marcus, Dom, Lucas Reyes, and Mags Carter through Kalona during the first nights of the Locust invasion.

Gears of War: E-Day is turning the clock back to the first night of the Locust invasion, and its campaign is already showing why that setting works. A campaign hands-on published by Xbox Wire follows Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago through Kalona, where familiar cover combat meets younger versions of the heroes and a Locust force that behaves far less predictably than the monsters of earlier games.

The game is scheduled to launch on October 6, 2026, with its story taking place 14 years before the original Gears of War. Kalona is under attack across three nights, leaving Marcus, Dom, and their 2 new squad members to fight through the chaos while learning what has risen beneath Sera. The campaign preview moves beyond the opening-night material from an earlier campaign breakdown and begins near the start of Act 2.

Kalona is still standing when the Locust arrive

The demo opens inside Kalona City Hall, which has been turned into a COG command post and makeshift medical center. Bravo Squad forms there: Marcus and Dom are joined by Lucas Reyes and Mags Carter before the group receives orders from Kalona’s mayor, Colonel Trench, and Captain Akila Grey.

Kalona has not yet become the ruined battlefield seen in later parts of the series. Civilians are still present, city operations continue where they can, and military leaders are trying to make decisions without knowing what the Locust are capable of. The mayor focuses on protecting the people still trapped in the city, while Trench keeps his attention on the war effort. Bravo Squad mostly stays silent during the briefing, a small detail that fits these earlier versions of Marcus and Dom.

A request for each soldier’s next of kin adds more personal detail. Dom names his wife, Maria, and asks about Ephyra, where his family lives. Neither Carter nor Reyes offers a next of kin, giving the pair an immediate connection. Marcus names his father, Adam Fenix, the war veteran and creator of the Hammer of Dawn. Trench also talks about putting the Hammer online, which may point toward the orbital weapon that becomes so important to the wider series.

Marcus feels younger, but the combat is pure Gears

Marcus is noticeably different at this point in his life. He is younger, less worn down by war, and not yet carrying the anger that defines some of his later appearances. The Coalition’s version of him still feels recognizable, though, especially once Bravo Squad reaches the field and the shooting starts.

The first mission sends the squad toward a bridge, throwing them into a firefight among abandoned, smoking vehicles. The familiar rhythm returns immediately: move from cover to cover, find a firing angle, and punish anything foolish enough to stand in the open. The Lancer hits with the same satisfying force fans expect, while Perfect Reload rewards a well-timed bumper press with a faster follow-up round. Miss the timing, and the weapon can jam at the worst possible moment.

Locust Drones are the real surprise. They do not simply stand in place and trade bullets. A Drone may duck behind cover after taking fire, retreat to a better position, or circle around the squad. One encounter saw a Drone throw a smoke bomb, charge through its own cover, and attack at close range. That kind of behavior makes every fight feel less scripted, especially when another enemy is already trying to get behind the squad.

Sniper-equipped Drones can stop the team’s advance, while audio cues warn that something may be creeping up from behind. The campaign also introduces enemies through the action itself. Wretches racing across the underside of a bridge are dubbed “Crawlers” by another squad, and the towering Boomers return as heavily armed threats that can end a fight with a single artillery blast.

Bravo Squad is built to fight as one unit

Marcus remains the single-player protagonist, but a four-way multiplayer lobby allows all 4 members of Bravo Squad to be playable. During the preview, AI companions handled the other roles, and they proved quick to react when the battle went sideways.

When Marcus went down, squad members rushed to revive him instead of continuing the fight. Dom could even leap onto an attacking enemy and stab it from behind, which is a very Dom way to solve a problem. The AI also responded to flanking Drones and threats outside the player’s view, making Bravo Squad feel like a coordinated team rather than 3 extra guns standing nearby.

Combat is not isolated from the rest of Kalona, either. Battles continue in distant streets, across rooftops, and through the sky as other COG units handle their own assignments. A later sequence sends Bravo Squad through a train filled with civilian casualties, showing how quickly normal life has been swallowed by the invasion.

The Chainsaw Lancer starts as a battlefield experiment

Act 2, Chapter 2 moves the squad to Oria Stadium, which now serves as a forward operating base. There, Bravo links up with Tai Kaliso and Theta Squad and encounters the early version of the weapon that would become one of the franchise’s defining tools.

The prototype Chainsaw Lancer is exactly as rough as it should be: a standard Lancer with an old chainsaw attached to it. The weapon appears during a rare moment of downtime, with soldiers trading jokes and war stories while they test the improvised design. It gives the squad a brief sense of hope before the next mission begins.

Kalona also starts to open up as a combat space. A tourist map becomes the squad’s in-game map, while supply caches let players refill ammunition, change weapons, and equip mods. Those upgrades include damage boosts and reload bonuses tied to chainsaw kills, adding a little room to tailor the way Marcus handles each encounter.

An optional side mission allows Bravo Squad to help another COG team before continuing toward the main objective. The campaign still follows a mostly direct path, but these moments make the wider battle feel less like a stage built only for Marcus and more like one operation within a much larger defense of the city.

A brutal demo ends with more tools to master

The final section introduces Tactical Gear, a group of rechargeable items that can provide healing or stun enemies. The rail station battle then pushes the squad through multiple levels of combat before the preview ends.

Across this slice of E-Day, the strongest impression is how closely the story and combat work together. Soldiers learn about the Locust while fighting them, civilians remain part of the crisis, and even ammunition shortages can turn a confident push into a scramble for the next supply cache. Marcus and Dom are not yet the rule-breaking heroes of the original game. They follow orders, trade jokes when they get the chance, and try to understand a war that has only just begun.

That early uncertainty gives Gears of War: E-Day a different emotional tone without losing the series’ identity. The campaign preview suggests a violent, character-focused return to the moment that set the rest of the saga in motion, with Kalona providing a fresh setting for the familiar brutality.
