For Honor’s Descent Into Darkness Story Sends Xaphan After Hulda

The story follows Xaphan as Guljin sends him into the Caves of Ormr to capture the Jormungandr Hulda.

For Honor‘s Conqueror takes on a grim new identity as the Keeper of Chains, and Ubisoft has given the Hero Skin a full story in Descent Into Darkness. The tale follows Xaphan on a mission from Guljin that leads him into the Caves of Ormr and toward a violent clash with Hulda. Ubisoft has now published the Blood Hunt season previewthe Blood Hunt season preview’s featured character story, detailing Xaphan’s mission to capture Hulda in the Caves of Ormr.

Xaphan begins the story by entering a cave near the Chiffer border, where Khatun scouts and soldiers have vanished. Guljin fears the Vikings could turn against her rule, so she sends her Keeper of Chains to investigate rumors that a female Jormungandr is behind the disappearances.

The investigation quickly turns brutal. Xaphan discovers a Shaman surrounded by skulls, bone totems, candles, and human remains before fighting his way deeper into the cave. His real target is Hulda, who is overseeing a cruel initiation ritual that uses acid, snake scales, and shattered limbs to indoctrinate new Jormungandrs.

Xaphan sees the ritual as proof that Heathmoor has fallen into chaos without control. His answer is not mercy or freedom. It is obedience to Guljin, whose rule he believes can impose peace through force. The story ties that conviction to his past, revealing how months spent imprisoned in darkness shaped his bond with the fireflies inside his flail and his faith in chains.

Hulda refuses to surrender and mocks Xaphan as a blind follower. Their fight moves through the cavern as hammer and flail collide, with Hulda nearly landing a killing blow before Xaphan regains his footing. He eventually catches her with a chain and takes her alive, since Guljin wants her brought to the arena as a warning to the Vikings.

The Keeper of Chains shows no such mercy to the wounded initiates. He kills them before leaving the cave, preventing more Jormungandrs from joining Hulda’s cause. The decision captures the character’s warped view of peace, where control is treated as compassion and resistance becomes another reason for punishment.

After returning from the North, Xaphan meets Guljin in his study. She tells him that dissent is threatening her rule in the South and asks for something that will make her enemies fear her again. When he asks what she needs, Guljin corrects him with two words: “Not what. Who.” The story ends with that order still hanging over the next stage of her campaign.

The Keeper of Chains’ chained armor, blue-lit flail, and grim service to Guljin give the Conqueror a darker identity than a simple cosmetic change would suggest. Share your thoughts on the story in the comments, and follow us on X, Bluesky, YouTube, Instagram, Steam, and Telegram.
