Square Enix has recently launched an anniversary website dedicated to Final Fantasy 9, marking the game’s milestone as it turns 25 years old. As part of the celebration, the company is rolling out new merchandise, including action figures and collectibles based on characters from this iconic RPG.
The favorite game originally debuted in 2000 on the PlayStation. Directed by Hiroyuki Ito, who later took the reins for Final Fantasy 12, this title continues to hold a special place in gamers’ hearts. In recognition of its legacy, Final Fantasy 9 was re-released in 2010 as a PS1 Classic for both PS3 and PSP, with support for Vita added in 2012.
The talk surrounding a potential remake hasn’t faded either. In 2021, whispers about a remake of Final Fantasy 9 emerged when it was spotted on an unannounced titles list from a leak involving GeForce Now’s database. This leak also hinted at other upcoming titles from Square Enix, such as the PC version of Final Fantasy 7 Remake, a remaster of Chrono Cross, and news surrounding Kingdom Hearts 4.
No official announcement for the Final Fantasy 9 remake has surfaced yet; however, sources have indicated that development is underway. Naoki Yoshida from Square Enix mentioned last year that creating such an expansive game as one single remake would be pretty challenging due to its volume,
