Diablo 4’s Waking Nightmares Will Recreate Nearly All of the Original Diablo
The Season 15 activity will lead players from Tristram Cathedral through the Catacombs and caves before the final descent into Hell to face Diablo.

Diablo 4’s Season 15 will include a near-complete recreation of the original Diablo through Waking Nightmares, a seasonal endgame activity that will begin with the season on September 15. The run will take players from Tristram Cathedral through the Catacombs and caves before sending them into Hell to face Diablo.
During a BlizzCon 2026 panel, Diablo 4 seasons lead Owen Leach described Waking Nightmares as throwback dungeons rebuilt with Diablo 4’s art style and gameplay. The activity will have three types, including Prime Evil Waking Nightmares, which recreate the dungeons leading to Baal, Mephisto and Diablo. Players will encounter them through the seasonal questline.
Deckard Cain will guide the run as a soul lost in time, despite his death in Diablo III. His presence gives the activity a direct connection to the older games while fitting the supernatural tone of Season of Hell’s Legacy.
Waking Nightmares follows Diablo’s original descent
The Diablo 1 version covers the most ground. Players will begin at Tristram Cathedral, descend into the Catacombs, continue through the caves, and end in Hell for a fight with the Lord of Terror. It will offer more than a return to the original game’s final encounter by retracing its major dungeon stages inside Diablo 4.
Diablo 4 has already shown players a damaged vision of Tristram during its main story, with echoes of Cain and Marius appearing as Mephisto tries to undermine the new Horadrim. That sequence was a scripted story moment rather than a dungeon players could freely run. Waking Nightmares will turn that kind of imagery into a full dungeon-crawling activity.
Season of Hell’s Legacy is built around Diablo’s history as the series reaches its 30th anniversary, with the September 15 start for Season 15 bringing Diablo, Baal and Mephisto into the same seasonal conflict. Blizzard also plans to continue supporting Diablo 4 with seasonal content rather than more expansions, while Diablo V targets a spring 2029 launch.
