Blizzard’s next Diablo 4 test cycle is taking aim at the game’s rarest loot. On June 2, the studio will open a PTR for season 14, and one of the biggest changes under review is a rework of Mythic Uniques.
Instead of standing as their own top tier, Mythic items will become a special version that can apply to any Unique. They can still drop naturally or come from the crafting system added in Lord of Hatred’s lighter season plan, but they will no longer arrive with fixed stats or extra skill powers. Blizzard says the stat rolls will be locked at their highest possible values, and that is the main thing players will be able to count on.
That is a big departure from the old setup, where seeing a Mythic drop usually meant a massive power spike right away. Heir of Perdition is the clearest example. Under the new rules, it will still guarantee movement speed, but its damage boost will fall from 80% to 15%. A lot more copies may end up dismantled instead of equipped.
There is logic behind the change. If Mythic versions can appear on a wider range of Uniques, Blizzard may be trying to keep the power curve under control. The trade-off is hard to miss, though. The loot chase becomes more random, and the rush of finding a truly elite drop takes a hit.
Blizzard can still tune the system before season 14 goes live, and the PTR will be the first chance to see how the overhaul feels in play. For Diablo 4 players who liked Mythics as rare, build-defining trophies, that test may be a tense one.
