Need For Speed Payback devs have been keeping this information in secret and no one was expecting this kind of a turnaround. Apparently, as a new year gift, EA and Ghost Games have agreed to release a free version of Need for Speed Payback, which is going to include free roam in NFS Payback.
Now, this may sound quite suspicious around EA’s microtransactions policy, but anyhow, it’s quite a big surprise in the new 2018, thus it will gather more fans around the world that are addicted to sports racing genre. You can find their official tweet below:

It is indeed a new year, and Electronic Arts and Ghost Games have undoubtedly proven it. We do not know any further info about this release, but it seems like will be a roam mode that includes challenges and a garage where players can tweak their limited amount of vehicles. Apart from the story mode the game has, this may sound like a perfect idea. It is quite common nowadays for all big titles to offer something for free.
