Insomniac Games’ upcoming title, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, proudly announces it has gone gold. But what does it mean when a game goes gold?
When a video game achieves ‘gold status,’ it signifies that the game’s primary development has concluded and that the version of the game is ready for production. This doesn’t mean that the developers are entirely done. Typically, they continue to work on further refinements or address last-minute bugs that might emerge. This is usually delivered as a day-one patch that players download when the game is released.
Reaching gold status is a monumental achievement for any game studio. It indicates that years of hard work, dedication, and iteration have culminated in a product ready to be shared with the world.
Nadji Jeter, who embodies the character of Miles Morales, playfully clarified the achievement by stating it’s “not bronze, not silver” but gold. Yuri Lowenthal, the voice behind Peter Parker, teased fans about the imminent virtual adventure. Mary Jane Watson’s voice, provided by Laura Bailey, shared her thrill regarding the forthcoming release. And, of course, the announcement wouldn’t be complete without Tony Todd, who voices the menacing Venom, echoing the game’s gold status.
Scheduled for an October 20th release exclusively on PS5, this sequel promises to be grander in scale and richer in content. The in-game universe will be approximately double the size of its predecessors, introducing new boroughs such as Queens and Brooklyn. This doesn’t mean the game will be longer. Instead, it offers more diversity in exploration, activities, and challenges.
