Jagex Cancels RuneScape Reignited, Keeps Dec. 2 Free Access

Players objected to a separate character path that could divide the community, limit interactions, and require another membership.

Jagex has canceled RuneScape Reignited less than two weeks after announcing it. Associate creative director Ryan Philpott said the fresh-start character path missed its goal of bringing new and returning players back without alienating the existing community.

The plan would have given new characters a separate start and a fresh economy without paid progression or Treasure Hunter. Players objected to starting over instead of bringing existing characters into the experience, and worried that separate servers could divide the community or limit character interactions. Some also questioned the cost of a second membership, since one RuneScape subscription does not cover multiple accounts. The original announcement had described Reignited as a separate character path within the game.

Jagex apologized for making veteran players feel pushed aside, then outlined possible revisions and asked for more feedback. The studio ultimately chose to cancel Reignited rather than take the proposal through another round of changes.

In his cancellation update, Philpott invoked RuneScape’s Evolution of Combat as a warning, saying, “the last time we didn’t listen to player feedback, combat changed forever.” He said it took Jagex more than a decade to recover. The November 2012 overhaul changed RuneScape’s combat and contributed to the divide between RuneScape 3 and Old School RuneScape.

Reignited’s cancellation does not affect the 10-day free-access period planned for Dec. 2 to Dec. 12, 2026. The Adventure Guide and first part of the remastered journey are also still scheduled for Dec. 2, and Jagex said players will not be split into separate worlds. New characters and characters that have not held membership since June 2, 2026, will be able to access members’ worlds and content during the free-access period.

Jagex says the rest of its 2027 roadmap remains in place. The roadmap lists a plugin milestone dated Oct. 19, with Hoard of Dragons, City of Gnomes, and Secrets of Karamja among the upcoming content. Hoard of Dragons includes an Agility rework and Dragon Slayer II content.
