Halls of Torment’s Experimental Branch Adds Weekly Challenges Ahead of Oct. 22 Update

Steam players can try Kill Count mode and a broad rebalance now, before the stable update is scheduled to arrive October 22.

Halls of Torment‘s experimental branch now has the game’s October update, giving Steam players early access to weekly challenge runs, Kill Count mode, expanded records, and a broad balance pass. The build is available starting October 5, while the stable update is scheduled for October 22, according to Chasing Carrots’ Steam announcement. In its September 28 preview, Chasing Carrots had described a planned Steam ranking for weekly challenges and detailed The Lost Archives’ Judgement-focused Inquisitor.

The rebalance cuts both ways: characters move faster and most abilities deal more damage, but enemies gain 50% more health and spawn in greater numbers across base-game stages. Weekly challenges also track scores, kills, times, and ranks, while challenge runs do not award Torment Shards.

To join the experimental branch, right-click Halls of Torment in your Steam library, open Properties, select Game Versions & Betas, and choose “experimental.” The game should update automatically, and players can switch back to the stable version at any time.

Chasing Carrots plans to keep updating the experimental branch over the coming weeks, taking feedback and bug reports into account before the October 22 release. The developer cautions that the current changelog may not be complete.

Halls of Torment Experimental Update Patch Notes

New Features

  • Challenge Shrine: A new shrine in the overworld offers a weekly challenge run.
    • It unlocks after you defeat the Lord of Greed in the Vault.
    • Each week, everyone gets the same hall, game mode and set of artifacts.
    • Your best score, kill count and time are saved, along with your ranks.
    • Challenge runs don’t award Torment Shards.
  • Kill Count Mode: A new game mode where you play until you reach a stage’s kill target.
    • Unlock it per stage through that stage’s “Berserker I” quest.
    • Kill targets range from 12,000 to 30,000, depending on the stage.
    • In Boglands it works the other way: Kill Count is the default, and “Boglands Champion I” unlocks Timer mode.
    • Switch modes at the Shrine of Torment.
  • Statistics & Records: The Compendium has a new Stats page with your lifetime statistics.
    • It tracks kills, damage, playtime, deaths, gold, potions, status effects applied and more.
    • Separate records are kept for each character, ability and map.
    • New settings can show these records on your HUD during a run.
  • Bottle Chests: Chests containing bottles now spawn during runs.
    • Unlock them with the Cupbearer quest “Gatherer” (it previously gave 2,500 gold).

    • Slow can now reach up to 70% and has no stack limit.
  • The Cleric’s main weapon no longer applies Affliction by default.
