SCUM’s October Update Adds Fishing Quests and Opens Apex Deathmatches

Version 1.3.4.0.160241 brings birds back to the Island and slows how quickly clothes get dirty.

SCUM update 1.3.4.0.160241 is live, adding Fishing Quests, a leaderboard for the biggest catches, and Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch events at the TEC1 Research Facility. The release closes the Into the Wild season, brings crows and seagulls back to the Island, and lets players craft clothing from Mutant Animal materials, as Gamepires’ October update announcement explains.

Fishing now asks players to pay closer attention to the fight. Larger fish pull harder from side to side, and reeling too quickly can give them a chance to recover. Bait, equipment, line tension, and bait condition all play a clearer role. Three quest tiers offer targets ranging from straightforward catches to tougher challenges, with Fame, cash, and fishing gear among the rewards. Players can track their progress in the Journal and compare catches on a server leaderboard.

Some fishing problems remain. Pulling a fish ashore while walking backward can still break the line, and frame rate can affect reeling. Gamepires advises players to avoid walking backward while bringing a catch ashore as it works on fixes. The update does fix several other fishing bugs, including lost attachments and lines breaking on the cast after a catch.

Crows now gather inland and seagulls along the coast. Flocks react to sound and movement, so noisy players may give away their position. Birds circling a corpse or fishing area can also hint at activity nearby, and players can hunt them for meat and feathers. The June update had already returned free-roaming land animals to the Island, with biome-based wildlife and hunting among its larger additions.

The Apex Hunt arena inside the TEC1 Research Facility is now available through the Events system for Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch. Mutant Animal materials also have a new use in craftable clothing. An optional Specialist Angler Pack adds a fishing rod, reel, waders, boots, backpack, three emotes, and bait and tackle. Its equipment can be crafted or bought from the Fisher Trader, while each character can claim the included consumables once per server at no in-game cost. Those supplies can also be found or crafted through normal play.

Beyond the new content, the update fixes a broad range of server, inventory, combat, vehicle, quest, base-building, and world issues. Clothing now gains dirt at 5% per hour instead of 20%, and dirt only becomes visible at 30%. Clothing rips now appear only below 70% durability.

The October update is the last Into the Wild release. Gamepires is working on the next season, but its next release will be a standalone update. Current plans include a Tattoo System, controller support, and making Photo Mode available to everyone. Photo Mode will leave Supporter Pack 2, with existing owners receiving replacement tattoos instead.

A partial wipe is planned for official servers with that later standalone release, not with the October update. Character stats and gold will carry over, while bases, gear, and supplies will be cleared. Private servers will not be subject to the partial wipe. Temporary Awareness and Archery progression boosts will end with the standalone release, but progress already earned in those skills will remain. Gamepires has not confirmed a release date or wipe timing and says it will do so ahead of the update. The studio is also exploring an optional Survivalist ruleset based on the current version of SCUM.

    • NPC Melee Weapon Damage to Vehicles | Default: Allow
    • NPC Projectile Damage to Vehicles | Default: Allow

Server owners must configure these separately from the player damage settings.
