The Viking Sagas Will Let Age of Empires II Players Tackle Its 3 Campaigns in Any Order
The preview also details Legendary Treasures, updated legacy scenarios, and a journey for Harald Hardrada from Constantinople to England.

Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition will let players tackle The Viking Sagas across its 3 campaigns in any order when the expansion launches on September 22, 2026. An official September 11 campaign preview also fills in the story around Harald Hardrada, new rewards, and several additions beyond the previously announced 15-mission campaign.
The expansion was previously announced as a 15-mission campaign split across three parts. Players will now be able to choose between those chapters instead of following one fixed route through Harald’s rise, return to Scandinavia, and invasion of England.
Harald’s saga moves from exile to England
The Exiled Prince begins with Harald driven from Norway and searching for a path back to power. His journey takes him to the Byzantine court and the Varangian Guard, where Empress Zoe becomes one of the forces standing between him and his ambitions.
The Hard Ruler brings Harald back to Scandinavia, where he must contend with Magnus Olafsson, Svein Estridsson, and nobles led by Einar Paunch-Shaker. The final chapter, The Last Viking, sends Harald toward England after Tostig Godwinson proposes a bid for the English throne. Harold Godwinson and the Saxons stand in the way of that campaign.

Legendary Treasures add rewards to each scenario
Harald’s missions will also contain Legendary Treasures that can grant bonuses to heroes, armies, or the economy. Examples include the Sun Stone of Leif Ericsson and the Chain Mail of Ivar the Boneless. Finding them will not be automatic, as mighty warriors and beasts guard the rewards.

The campaign will let Harald fight alongside all 3 civilizations included in the expansion, the Varangians, Danes, and Saxons, as well as the reworked Vikings. The added variety fits a story in which Harald serves different rulers and builds alliances whenever they help his return to power.
Legacy scenarios will receive Viking Sagas additions
The expansion will also update Hastings, Vinlandsaga, and York with the new civilizations. Northern scenery will include details such as driftwood, seaweed, heather, gorse, and snowy rocks, along with animals including seals, walruses, and elk.
The Viking Sagas is available to preorder on Steam, Microsoft Store, and XBOX with a 15% discount. The expansion will become available through the PlayStation 5 store on September 22, 2026.
