The Blood of Dawnwalker’s Esme Choice Has No Long-Term Consequences
Refusing to force-feed Esme leads to the same next objective while causing less distress during the scene.

Early in The Blood of Dawnwalker, Coen must decide whether to force-feed his mother, Esme. Choosing not to feed her against her will is the kinder option, although the decision only changes the immediate scene and has no long-term impact on the story.
Do not force-feed Esme
Selecting “Alright. Let’s try” makes Coen pick up the spoon and attempt to feed Esme himself. She knocks the spoon away and breaks down in tears, leaving Coen’s father, Pieter, upset about what he tried to do.
The alternative, “I won’t feed her against her will”, gives Pieter the chance to try instead. Esme still bats the spoon away, so the practical result is the same, but she appears less distressed by the outcome.
Neither option changes the rest of the prologue or creates a lasting consequence. It is an early introduction to the game’s choice system before the more serious decisions arrive. The wider time pressure in Laslea also means that actions matter as the day moves toward the evening Blood Mass, as covered in our article about The Blood of Dawnwalker’s time limit.
After the scene, Pieter asks Coen to visit Anca’s place and collect herbs so Esme can get through the evening’s Blood Mass. If you want to avoid the harsher version of the moment, refuse to force-feed her. You will still receive the same objective either way.
