One GTA 6 Playthrough Took a Rockstar Developer 80 Hours
Rob Nelson's non-final-build run included optional objectives, including one with narrative consequences, while separate playtime ranges remain projections.

One playthrough of Grand Theft Auto VI took Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson 80 hours, but the run does not establish the game’s campaign length. Nelson used a non-final build in February 2026, and his time included portions of the main story alongside optional objectives.
HowLongToBeat’s player-submitted figures offer comparisons, not a forecast for GTA 6. Its GTA V 100% completion estimate is about 90 hours, while its Red Dead Redemption 2 completionist estimate is 196 hours. Those are different games and different completion runs, so they cannot confirm how long GTA 6 will take.
What Rob Nelson’s GTA 6 playthrough included
Nelson discussed the run in The New York Times interview. He said he hopes players will slow down and spend time with Jason and Lucia rather than rushing from one mission to the next. “I hope that there will be people that want to get up, have a cup of coffee, shower, get dressed, go out for a little exercise,” he said.
Everyday activities sit alongside the larger criminal story. Players can eat an apple, open a refrigerator, and drink a smoothie. The smoothie temporarily increases health, giving the routine action a gameplay effect.
Rockstar has also said GTA 6’s map is three times larger than the map in Red Dead Redemption 2. A larger world does not automatically mean a longer campaign, but optional encounters and activities can give players more to do beyond the central story.
Nelson’s 80-hour run did not include future post-launch updates or online content. Players who pursue more optional activities could take longer, but the available figures do not establish a guaranteed playtime.
