Resident Evil Movie Will Borrow the Games’ Weapon Progression Without Retelling Their Stories

Director Zach Cregger said the film will move from pistols to shotguns and machine guns while using first-person shooting scenes and featuring healing sprays, herbs, typewriters, and padlocks.

Zach Cregger’s upcoming Resident Evil movie will tell an original story, but its structure will borrow several ideas directly from the games. Rather than recreate a specific campaign, the film aims to capture the rhythm of moving through unfamiliar spaces, finding better equipment, and running into one locked obstacle after another.

Cregger discussed that approach in a featurette, explaining that the movie’s environments will keep changing at a pace inspired by the games. “I tried to keep the environment changing every seven or eight minutes, like the games. You’re always moving into another level as it were,” he said.

Resident Evil’s game mechanics will influence the movie’s progression

The film will also use a game-like equipment curve. Bryan begins with a pistol before gaining a shotgun and then a machine gun, while other recognizable items appear throughout the story. Healing spray cans, green herbs, and typewriters are all part of Cregger’s attempt to make the setting feel connected to the survival-horror series.

Even the franchise’s more frustrating roadblocks will appear. Padlocks will repeatedly stop Bryan from moving forward, turning progress into a search for the right way to open the next area rather than a simple trip from one destination to another.

First-person scenes extend Resident Evil’s camera language

Multiple shooting scenes will use a first-person perspective, including moments where Bryan creeps through corridors and fires at fast-moving infected. The choice stands out because the early Resident Evil games built their identity around fixed cameras and third-person viewpoints, but the series has since made room for first-person horror.

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard made first person its primary perspective in 2017. Resident Evil 8: Village and Resident Evil Requiem both include first- and third-person options, giving Cregger more than one established visual language to draw from.

First-person cinematography is only one part of the film’s plan. Cregger is using the perspective, atmosphere, progression, and pressure of the games without reproducing one campaign frame by frame.

Cregger has also made clear that the movie will not follow Leon or adapt one of the games’ existing plots. The film’s decision to leave Leon out fits its broader plan to introduce original characters while keeping the rules and atmosphere of the game world intact.

“This is an opportunity for me to be loyal to the games in spirit and in tone and build a story that puts you in that scenario again and again, with increasing stakes,” Cregger said. Familiar survival-horror ideas can therefore return without forcing the characters into a retelling of events players already know.

Austin Abrams’ delivery route leads into Raccoon City’s outbreak

Austin Abrams stars as Bryan, a hospital delivery driver carrying an important package to a hospital in Raccoon City. The routine assignment turns dangerous when a viral outbreak sends infected monsters into his path, transforming one night of work into a fight to survive.

Resident Evil will open in theaters on September 18, 2026. The movie’s original plot may set it apart from the games, but Cregger’s comments suggest that fans will still recognize the slow-burn progression, resource discoveries, first-person tension, locked doors, and rising danger that define the series.
