Nioh 3’s Hell Rising DLC Is Now Available With New Weapons and a Fresh Difficulty

The expansion adds the hoko and shield weapon categories, Hundred Demon Realms Picture Scrolls, and new Guardian Spirits, Martial Arts, Skills, Ninjutsu, and Onmyo Magic.

Hell Rising, the first DLC for Nioh 3, is available now. The Steam announcement confirms that players can enter a Keian-era version of Edo, where the Crucible has taken over and a new intrigue surrounding the Spirit Stones plays out.

The August 19 launch window had been announced in advance, with the earlier Hell Rising release coverage detailing the expansion’s additions before launch.

Hell Rising adds new weapons and repeatable battles

The DLC introduces the hoko & shield weapon categories. Used together, they combine the short spear’s offensive abilities with the shield’s defensive role, giving players another way to approach Nioh 3’s battles.

Hell Rising also adds the Hundred Demon Realms Picture Scrolls, which are tied to highly customizable battles that can be fought repeatedly. A new difficulty mode gives players more room to develop character builds and create complex combat strategies.

More additions are planned for the DLC series

New Guardian Spirits, Martial Arts, Skills, Ninjutsu, and Onmyo Magic are also part of Hell Rising. The story unfolds in an Edo damaged by the Crucible, adding a new setting and conflict for players to work through.

Work is also underway on the second DLC, Bloody Insurrection. The announcement did not include a release date for that expansion.

Nioh 3: Hell Rising

Our protagonist and appointed shogun, Takechiyo, journeys through time and is led to Edo in the future by an unknown yokai he met in his dreams. There, following the death of the future Takechiyo, the era of peace has ended, and Edo has been retaken by the Crucible. With the cooperation of a one-eyed swordsman, Yagyu Jubei, and a Spanish envoy, Rodrigo, Takechiyo faces yet another plot revolving around Spirit Stones and an enemy with a strong resentment towards the shogunate.
