A new unofficial version of Doom II for Doom 3 Remake arrived in July 2026, giving PC players a fresh reason to revisit the long-running project as QuakeCon 2026 gets underway. The mod began in 2010 with an ambitious goal: bring Doom II’s maps into the Doom 3 engine.
The current build contains 10 maps, though it is not a finished campaign. Only the first three or four maps are considered fully playable, while later areas contain glitches and visual problems. In practical terms, this version is closer to a beta or playable preview than a complete remake.
Doom II’s classic design meets Doom 3’s darker presentation
The concept works because it combines two very different eras of id Software’s shooter design. The levels, music, and sound effects come from Doom II, while the environments use the darker visual style associated with Doom 3.
That mix will probably appeal most to players who enjoyed Doom 3 and still have a soft spot for the original games. It is not trying to replace the classic release. Instead, it gives familiar locations a heavier atmosphere and a new visual identity.
The project has received unofficial updates over the years, but the current version still has plenty of rough edges. There is no sign that the entire game will be finished soon, so it is best approached as a fun fan-made experiment rather than a full release.
Players who want to try it can find the unofficial v0.29 build on ModDB. Three videos cover the opening maps, including MAP01: Entryway, MAP02: Underhalls, and MAP03: Gantlet.
