Quake’s Dawn of the Machine Episode Is Now Free on PS5 and PS4

The free update adds a 19-map campaign, a new soundtrack, and a Deathmatch map to Quake.

Quake’s 30th anniversary now has a playable celebration. Dawn of the Machine is available as a free update for Quake on PlayStation, with versions for both PS5 and PS4.

MachineGames created the episode in collaboration with id Software. The release also lines up with QuakeCon’s 30th anniversary, giving fans of the classic shooter another reason to return to its fast, brutal combat. PlayStation’s announcement describes Dawn of the Machine as a 19-map campaign with a new soundtrack and a separate Deathmatch map.

The launch trailer gives a look at the episode’s grim setting and returning combat style.

Dawn of the Machine brings new threats and weapons

The episode puts players back in control of Ranger, Quake’s battle-hardened protagonist. This time, he is trapped inside an illusory dimension where time folds back on itself. Progress through the campaign involves finding a way out of the loop, improving health and ammunition supplies, and confronting The Nightmare Machine, the force holding Ranger inside the prison.

MachineGames and id Software also created fresh variations on familiar enemies. The Rocket Ogre, Demo Dog, and Blood Shambler return in new forms, while the Laser Cannon can fire shots that ricochet around the environment. The lightning-powered Super Axe gives Ranger another close-range option for the campaign’s frantic fights.

The team wanted the episode to preserve Quake’s blend of horror, action, and chaos. Andrew Yoder, MachineGames’ lead level designer, summed up that goal as “Horror! Action! Madness!”

A continuous campaign replaces Quake’s traditional hubs

Dawn of the Machine takes a different approach from MachineGames and id Software’s earlier Quake episodes, including Call of the Machine and Dimension of the Machine. Those releases used hub areas that reset progression between major sections. The new episode instead connects its maps into one continuous journey, allowing upgrades and progress to carry forward.

That structure supports the story’s looping-dimension premise. Ranger must piece together a route through a place where appearances cannot be trusted before facing the source of the illusion. The development team described the format as a demanding change that required close coordination across the project.

Quake Club gave MachineGames and id Software room to experiment

Dawn of the Machine began as a smaller internal project after work on Indiana Jones and the Great Circle: The Order of Giants DLC. Yoder approached the studio’s game director about creating another Quake episode, and the group that formed around the idea became known internally as Quake Club.

The team included developers who had been making Quake maps since the original game launched in 1996, along with members who joined the series later. Quake’s modding tools and its less demanding visual style gave people room to contribute beyond their usual specialties.

Christian Plogfors, an advanced level designer at MachineGames, designed two levels and composed the episode’s dark ambient soundtrack. His music gives Dawn of the Machine a tone that matches its strange environments and time-loop story.
