id Software Says It Still Has the Team to Make DOOM and Quake

The studio said layoffs affected multiple teams but left it roughly the size it was during development of DOOM (2016).

id Software has addressed the recent Xbox layoffs, saying the studio still has enough staff to continue developing the games and technology associated with its 35-year history.

At least 136 employees were let go at the DOOM developer during the cuts. The layoffs affected several teams, including the group working on id Tech, but id Software said its remaining staff is still positioned to continue production.

id Software Says It Is Continuing Its Work

In a statement shared through the studio’s official social media account, id Software thanked fans for their support and explained that the layoffs were distributed across different teams. The studio said its current headcount is roughly comparable to the team that worked on DOOM (2016).

“While our studio was impacted, those changes were spread across teams,” id Software said in its statement. “We still have the crew we need to build the games and tech we’re known for. The team today is about the same size we were when making DOOM (2016). We have always had a flat studio where everyone is a maker, and we will remain true to that philosophy moving forward.”

The studio added that it is supporting both the employees who remain and those who lost their jobs. It also confirmed that the team plans to attend QuakeCon in August, suggesting that the event will offer the next public opportunity to hear from id Software.

id Software’s latest release was DOOM: The Dark Ages, which launched before the layoffs. The studio has not announced a new game in this statement.
