RuneScape’s $12 One-Time Balloon Offer Has Reportedly Been Pulled
Jagex replaced RuneScape's repeat-purchase house decorations with refunds for extra copies and permanent recipes after player backlash.
RuneScape players were reportedly asked to pay $12 for balloons that could only be used once. According to Kotaku’s report on the short-lived offer, the charge was withdrawn after players pushed back.
Jagex initially announced the player-owned house marketplace bundles on August 3. In its marketplace announcement, the developer described bundles containing a fixed number of furniture items rather than standard cosmetics. Customers could therefore purchase the same bundle more than once.
One bundle cost $12 worth of RuneCoins and included items such as balloons. Since the decorations were consumed after use, players who wanted to use the same items again would have needed to buy another bundle. At $12 per use, the proposal would have required players to pay again whenever they wanted the same effect, which helps explain why the offer drew such a negative response.

Jagex changes the purchase model
Jagex responded in its August 4 update. The party bundles would no longer be available for repeat purchase, and the studio said players who bought additional copies would receive refunds for those extra purchases.
The bundles will instead provide permanent recipes for items that can be replicated without buying the same decoration again. Jagex also said the player-owned house marketplace is still new, but future offerings will follow a buy once, unlock forever model. Per-item sales for player-owned houses will not be part of that direction.
