Beast of Reincarnation Will Put Your Parry Timing to the Test on PS5

Game Freak's action RPG follows Emma and her giant dog Koo through a blighted version of Japan when it launches on August 4, 2026.

Beast of Reincarnation will arrive on PlayStation 5 on August 4, 2026, bringing Game Freak’s post-apocalyptic action RPG to players who enjoy demanding melee combat, strange worlds, and very large dogs. A hands-on look published by PlayStation Blog highlights a combat system built around precise parries, layered abilities, and the close partnership between Emma and her companion, Koo.

The story takes place in Japan in the year 4026, long after a disaster known as the Blight corrupted plants, animals, people, and entire regions. Blight forests have forced survivors into scattered settlements, while powerful creatures called Nushi spread destruction across the ruined landscape. The Beast of Reincarnation is said to return once every 100 years, leaving Emma with the task of ending the cycle.

A dangerous world shaped by the Blight

Emma was born with the Blight and has been treated as an outcast by her colony. She also has the ability to absorb the powers of defeated Nushi, giving her a path toward confronting the Beast. Her journey takes her through corrupted forests, collapsed remnants of civilization, flooded underground facilities, and other hostile habitats.

The game’s story keeps Emma at the center of the mystery. She has no memory of her origins, and the strange figure called Violet is visible and audible only to her. Those unanswered questions sit alongside the larger conflict surrounding the Blight and the Beast.

Parries are the key to survival

Emma’s basic toolkit includes fast sword attacks on R1, projectile weapons such as bolts and arrows, a dodge on Circle, and a block and parry on L1. Light enemies and early corrupted golems can be handled with direct attacks, but tougher opponents demand much more patience.

One early boss, a huge deer-like Nushi, uses repeated antler strikes that must be parried before Emma can counterattack. Later enemies and mini-bosses add unblockable attacks and more complex patterns. Missing the timing can quickly turn a promising fight into a scramble, while a successful parry opens the door to a counter and helps build resources for Koo’s strongest abilities.

Emma can also stagger enemies by attacking the meter tied to their weaknesses. Once an opponent is exposed, she can finish the sequence with R1. Smaller enemies may be eliminated through stealth or well-placed projectile headshots, giving players options beyond standing in front of every threat.

Emma’s Blight powers add vertical movement

Emma’s hair is more than a visual detail. When a jump point appears, R2 sends root-like tendrils toward higher ground and pulls her upward. Holding R2 creates a temporary platform, while the Cross button launches her into the air.

That vertical movement works during fights as well as during traversal. Emma can create distance, attack from above, and perform a “death from above” assassination with R1. Against groups, using enemy sight cones and elevated positions can make the difference between being surrounded and controlling the encounter.

Her other combat tools include Nushi Skills and Blade Arts, activated with Square. Emma can also trigger Entanglement Overdrive by pressing L3 and R3 together, slowing time and giving her and Koo a chance to turn a difficult battle around.

Koo is more than a combat companion

Koo, a massive wolf-like dog affected by the Blight, can be ordered to attack and has his own set of Bloom Arts. These special moves are selected through a menu with Triangle and include a short timing challenge. Fluorescence Points used for Bloom Arts come from successful parries, tying Emma’s defensive skill directly to Koo’s offensive options.

Koo also helps outside of combat. He can guide Emma toward objectives with a pheromone indicator, bark when he notices something nearby, and retrieve items. His skill slots can be expanded by building Emma’s rapport with him through petting, treats, and keeping him clean at the shower in the Cleanse Walker, Emma’s mobile base.

The DualSense controller provides haptic feedback during these interactions, including a noticeable response when Emma pets Koo. It is a small system, but it gives the pair’s relationship a place in the day-to-day rhythm of the adventure.

Food, upgrades, and skill trees

Beast of Reincarnation also layers survival and progression systems over its action combat. Emma and Koo recover naturally only when their hunger gauges have food in them, and meals can raise stats such as health, attack, and defense.

Emma’s surrogate sister Kagura prepares meals from ingredients gathered in the world. Her cooking improves as players interact with her and bring back new recipes. The Cleanse Walker can also support a small farm, including raising a chicken for eggs and growing crops with different harvest times.

Emma and Koo each have skill trees, and players can find and improve multiple weapons. Enemy factions may attack one another on sight, creating opportunities to watch a fight unfold before joining it or to use the chaos to reposition.

With its blend of parry-focused battles, stealth options, vertical movement, food systems, and a companion who can both fight and fetch supplies, Beast of Reincarnation is shaping up to be a broad action RPG rather than a simple boss-to-boss trek. The PS5 version will launch on August 4, 2026.
