Gears of War: E-Day Details 12-Player Horde Siege, Versus Modes, and Multiplayer Progression

The Coalition's multiplayer plans include four Horde Siege classes, six Versus maps, five post-launch seasons, and an open beta beginning August 6.

Gears of War: E-Day will bring a 12-player version of Horde to its multiplayer lineup alongside four-versus-four competitive modes. The Coalition detailed the game’s launch plans, progression systems, classes, maps, and customization in a multiplayer announcement on Steam.

The game’s multiplayer beta will feature the “Golden Quarter” Horde Siege map, while the full release will include three Horde Siege maps and six Versus maps. The open beta begins on August 6, 2026.

Horde Siege brings three squads into one battle

Horde Siege is built for 12 players across three separate COG squads. Each squad receives its own mission, but all three teams operate on the same larger battlefield in Kalona. Squads can cross paths, assist one another, or use equipment and fortifications left behind after another team extracts.

The mode is still about surviving Locust attacks, but its wider maps and shared battlefield create more decisions between objectives. Teams collect Energy, respond to events, pursue optional tasks, and decide how much support to provide to the other squads before the final extraction.

Horde Siege will launch with three maps set across different districts of Kalona. The beta map, Golden Quarter, takes place after the battle for the city’s historic district and includes architecture intended to recall locations from earlier Gears of War games. More maps will arrive after launch.

Four classes define each squad’s starting role

Players choose a class before each Horde Siege mission. Classes provide a starting loadout, a combat bonus, a progression track, and Tactical Gear with a cooldown. Character skins are separate from class selection, so players can pair their preferred character with any role.

  • Assault: Uses midrange weapons and can deploy a Sonic Disruptor to stun incoming enemies. The class also deals more damage while in cover.
  • Breacher: Focuses on close-range combat and carries an Adrenaline Injector that restores health and reduces incoming damage. The class has stronger resistance to status effects and melee attacks.
  • Marksman: Takes advantage of long sightlines with precision weapons and a Pulse Drone that tags Locust units. Critical hits deal increased damage.
  • Medic: Supports the squad with the Stim Vaporizer, which can heal and revive nearby Gears, including downed players from other squads. The Medic also regenerates health faster.

The Coalition said squads will not be locked into a required composition. Four players can choose the same class, or they can mix roles based on the mission and their preferred playstyle.

Three Horde Siege playlists cover different match lengths

Horde Siege missions are divided into three playlists:

  • Blitz: Short missions with one or two objectives that usually take 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Siege: Standard missions with multiple objectives and more map traversal, lasting about 20 to 40 minutes.
  • Horde: A longer defensive mode built around surviving 10 waves in one location. Matches can last 50 to 60 minutes.

Difficulty is tied to class progression rather than campaign settings. Rookie is recommended for class levels 1 through 10, Infantry for levels 10 through 20, and Commander for levels 20 through 30. Allfather is reserved for max-level classes and offers a slim chance of survival.

Most missions revolve around R.I.G. devices, or Resonation Imaging Geographers. The COG uses this mining equipment to map Locust tunnels beneath Kalona. Objectives include securing areas, calibrating R.I.G.s, repairing damaged equipment, defending an active scanner, and surviving 10 waves around a single R.I.G.

Optional objectives can reward Weapon Parts, free equipment, and Squad Perks. Perks last only for the current mission, while Weapon Parts can unlock permanent weapon modifications. Players must successfully extract to keep parts collected during a mission, though only one member of the squad needs to escape for the mission to count as complete.

Energy, events, and squad lives add more pressure

Horde Siege uses a shared Energy pool. Players earn it by completing objectives and defeating enemies, then spend it individually at Supply Caches. Energy can buy weapons, equipment, Squad Perk upgrades, and turret installations. Turrets can also be detached, giving players access to Heavy Weapons.

Matches can include Mission Modifiers, Poisons, Invasion Events, and COG Resupplies. Modifiers may require Perfect Active Reloads, restrict health regeneration to cover, or cause enemies to explode when they die. Poisons strengthen Locust health and damage after boss waves, with the effect applying separately to each squad.

Invasion Events alert all three squads when a major enemy such as a Corpser or Brumak enters the map. The event can block extractions or disable Supply Caches, and every squad that helps defeat the threat receives part of the reward. COG Resupplies offer free equipment, Squad Perks, or Weapon Parts, but they also attract Locust forces.

Death drops a player’s COG tags. A squadmate can carry the tags to a Supply Cache to revive the fallen player, and members of other squads can perform an immediate revival by collecting them. If an entire squad dies, it loses a Squad Life. Losing every Squad Life ends the mission and returns the team to the Horde Siege lobby with partial XP.

Class levels unlock weapons and modifications

Each Horde Siege class has 30 progression levels at launch. Class XP unlocks weapons, equipment, Armor Mods, Tactical Gear Mods, and Weapon Mods. Higher levels also provide increases to base health and damage.

Armor Mods can affect health, ammunition reserves, weapon-swap speed, and execution bonuses. Tactical Gear Mods can reduce cooldowns, extend range, or add new effects. Weapon Mods let players alter guns such as the Prototype Lancer and Gnasher, including the option to equip a bayonet on the Gnasher.

Weapon customization carries across classes. A mod unlocked for a Prototype Lancer on the Assault class will also apply when that weapon is equipped by another class.

Versus launches with four 4v4 modes

Versus matches use four-versus-four teams and equal starting equipment. Weapon Mods are disabled, while Power Weapons placed around each map provide the main source of equipment-based advantage.

  • Team Deathmatch: The mode returns with dynamic respawns that adjust based on where the battle is taking place. Teams win by eliminating the opposing team’s lives.
  • Conquest: Teams fight over zones that remain active until one side earns enough time inside to score, rather than rotating on a fixed timer.
  • Demolition: Players fight over a neutral bomb, plant it at one of two enemy sites, and defend it without respawns after it is armed. Three detonations win the match.
  • Crucible: A new mode centered on carrying a Power Core into a scoring zone. The zone moves and shrinks during the round, while the Power Core can release an electrical blast against nearby enemies.

Six new Versus maps will be available at launch: Outpost, Battleship, Park, Precinct, Market, and Skyward. Their layouts use cover positions, lanes, power-weapon locations, and traversal routes built around E-Day’s movement system.

Ranked playlists will assign each mode its own Skill Division, Skill Rating, and Rank Rating. Players gain or lose Rank Rating based on match results and performance, with penalties for quitting. Social playlists will include 4v4 Quickplay, Player vs. Bot matches, rotating modes, and special events. Players can vote on the next match while keeping the lobby together.

Boot Camp will teach the new controls and mechanics in a short training course. Combat Training will offer a multiplayer map, weapon practice, Locust encounters, and support for up to four-player co-op.

Cosmetics can mostly be earned through play

Gears of War: E-Day will launch with more than 60 character skins covering COG and Locust characters. Campaign characters and skins will be available to unlock on day one. Weapon skin sets apply to every supported weapon instead of requiring separate purchases for individual guns.

Players can also collect poses, banners, emblems, icons, titles, and menu music. Poses appear in lobbies and match presentation screens rather than during gameplay. Banners will also mark completed objectives and claimed rewards in Horde Siege.

The Coalition said there will be no battle pass or Tour of Duty system. Most customization items can be earned through seasonal and event challenges, achievements, medals, or matches. Players earn Coins from multiplayer performance, Player Level milestones, and medals, then spend them on specific items in the Barracks.

Some items will remain pay-only. Those include Premium Edition content, charity bundles, and a limited number of partnership items, such as the Legendary Ride the Lightning Weapon Skin Set made with Metallica. Iron will serve as the optional premium currency for buying individual items or featured shop offers.

The shop will rotate weekly, but its bundles will not contain permanent shop exclusives. Items from a bundle will remain available in the Barracks, and the price of a bundle will decrease when a player already owns some of its contents.

Medals, Re-Up levels, and five post-launch seasons

The multiplayer progression system includes more than 80 medal series at launch, with Bronze, Silver, Gold, Onyx, and Diamond tiers. Players can display up to three earned medals on their Emblem. Player XP raises the account level to 100, after which players can Re-Up and return to level 1 for an exclusive reward. Four Re-Ups are available, covering 500 total levels. Reaching level 100 on the final Re-Up awards Gears 2-inspired wings for multiplayer lobbies.

Weekly Challenges will provide 12 tasks, split evenly between Horde Siege and Versus. Seasonal Challenges will offer 20 tasks across both modes, while event challenges and permanent Foundations Challenges will provide more ways to earn items. Achievements will award Player Titles, with some also unlocking character cosmetics. Four Mastery achievements will award Legendary Character Skins, including the updated Dead Serious achievement.

The Coalition plans five themed multiplayer seasons, beginning with Season 1: Emergence. The seasons will add maps, modes, characters, skins, Horde Siege classes, and limited-time events.
