Stardew Valley’s new mod lets you switch between 2D, 3D, and VR

GingasVR's PC mod works without a VR headset and supports most existing mods and expansions, though it is still in an early stage.

Stardew Valley can now be played in 3D or VR thanks to a new mod from GingasVR. The project was released on July 28 after months of work, and it lets players switch between the standard 2D presentation, desktop 3D, and VR with a button press.

The mod is aimed at PC players and does not require a VR headset. According to the GingasVR mod page, the desktop 3D version can be played on its own, while VR hardware is only needed for the full virtual-reality setup. A few additional downloads are required before it works.

Compatibility is another major part of the project. GingasVR says the mod works with nearly every other mod and expansion, although the creator is keeping the system lightweight rather than rebuilding every character and object as a fully modeled 3D asset.

That approach also explains why some parts of the game may look unusual. The mod is adapting a 2D game to 3D and VR, so the visual results are not always perfectly natural. Even so, the creator says early testing has been fun.

There is more to the project than viewing Pelican Town from a different angle. Motion controls can support physical interactions during activities such as fishing and combat. Cutscenes can also be customized to appear in 2D, third-person, or first-person formats.

The mod is still in its early days, and its presentation may change as development continues. For players who have spent countless hours farming, fishing, and building relationships in Stardew Valley, it offers a new way to revisit the same routines without changing the game’s core identity.
