Halo: Campaign Evolved has made its PlayStation debut, and a console comparison found that the remake performs a little better on PS5 than on Xbox Series X. The best version is reserved for PS5 Pro, where the game combines its higher visual settings with a 60fps target.
Halo: Campaign Evolved launched on July 28 as a single-player remake of the original Halo campaign. Digital Foundry’s testing compared the game across current consoles, including the base PS5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PS5 Pro.
On the standard PS5, cutscenes maintain a smoother frame rate than they do on Xbox Series X. The consoles otherwise use nearly the same settings, with the difference between them coming down to a very small advantage for Sony’s hardware.
The remake includes Quality and Performance modes. Quality mode adds more foliage and slightly finer visual detail, but Performance mode is the better pick for most players because it keeps the action moving at a steadier pace.
PS5 Pro changes that trade-off. Its version of Quality mode effectively becomes the Performance mode, allowing the console to retain the extra visual detail while targeting 60fps. It also loses fewer frames and produces a cleaner image, helped by PSSR2.
That result is especially interesting for a game built with Unreal Engine 5 features such as Lumen and Nanite. Even the less powerful console options handle those systems at 60fps, although PS5 Pro has the clearest advantage when image quality and performance are considered together.
Xbox Series X remains close behind the standard PS5, so the gap is not large enough to define the experience by itself. PS5 owners get the slightly smoother version, while PS5 Pro owners receive the strongest combination of visual detail and frame rate.
The remake’s arrival also places one of Xbox’s most recognizable series on PlayStation at the same time as its other console versions. A strong launch could help determine whether more Halo projects follow on PS5, a possibility previously discussed by the developer.
