Halo: Campaign Evolved’s PC Split-Screen Was There All Along—and Mods Unlocked It

Two PC mods expose the hidden campaign feature, with one adding Player 2 customization and keyboard-and-controller support.

Halo: Campaign Evolved launched on PC on July 28 without a menu option for local split-screen campaign co-op. Less than a day later, modders had already made the feature playable for PC users.

The remake includes local split-screen on consoles, while the PC version shipped with the feature hidden. That omission is especially curious because the necessary systems were already present in the PC files, including split-screen HUD layouts, sign-in interfaces, visual effects, and audio settings.

Two mods currently expose the mode. The first mod calls the existing split-screen code and makes local campaign co-op available without adding major changes of its own.

The second mod goes a little further. It adds separate armor and weapon customization for Player 2, extra Player 2 settings, an editable Player 2 name, and support for a keyboard and mouse alongside a controller. It also addresses pause-menu and Player 2 interface problems.

That means PC players can choose between a straightforward unlock and a version with more customization. Both mods target the same missing feature, but the second option may be a better fit for households using mixed input devices or wanting separate character settings.

The situation also shows how quickly PC modders can expose systems that are already inside a game but not available through its menus. In this case, the split-screen framework was not missing from the PC build. It was simply not presented as an in-game option.

Halo: Campaign Evolved launched today with its original campaign, but the PC split-screen option now comes from the modding community rather than the default settings.
