Gears of War: E-Day Shows Its First Night of Chaos in New Gameplay Breakdown

The Coalition detailed new movement options, a living Kalona, returning Locust threats, and the origin of the chainsaw Lancer ahead of the October 6 launch.

Gears of War: E-Day received a detailed gameplay breakdown on July 27, with The Coalition walking through the opening moments of the campaign, its new movement systems, and the first night of the Locust invasion. The team discussed the footage during an official Xbox Podcast episode recorded at The Coalition’s studio in Vancouver.

The game is scheduled to launch on October 6, 2026. The Coalition also confirmed that beta tests will take place during the summer, giving players an early chance to try the new version of Gears’ combat and movement.

Kalona becomes the heart of E-Day

The gameplay demo begins during the first night of Emergence Day, when Marcus Fenix, Dom Santiago, Megs Carter, and Lucas Reyes are thrown into the invasion. Rather than opening in a city that has already been destroyed, the game presents Kalona as a functioning place filled with civilians, intact buildings, older cars, shops, and signs of a recent return to peacetime.

That setting gives the destruction more weight. Players will see people trying to escape, soldiers looking for help, and parts of the city change from intact streets into smoking ruins. The Coalition said Kalona was built as a complete city, with locations remaining connected even when the camera moves away from them.

The team also used a retro visual style inspired by 1970s New York. CRT televisions, older cash registers, blocky vehicles, and other period details help establish a version of Sera that has not appeared in previous games.

Movement gets more options without losing Gears’ weight

E-Day rebuilt its movement system from scratch while keeping cover at the center of combat. Players can slide into cover, move beneath obstacles, vault across gaps, and use low ground cover to crawl through more dangerous spaces.

The game also adds a jump button. It is not meant to turn Gears into a platformer, but it can open new routes through arenas, including paths over trucks and store fixtures. The Coalition described these options as a way to create more flanking opportunities without losing the heavy feel of the series.

Active Reload is back as well, although its position has changed. The timing bar now appears in the center of the screen, closer to the player’s aim. Weapons that load one shell at a time, such as the Gnasher, can also be interrupted during reloading so players can fire a shell immediately at the cost of a smaller magazine.

New threats arrive alongside familiar enemies

The opening invasion introduces the Locust from the perspective of characters who have never faced them before. Early Wretches appear without armor and act more like starving attack animals. Unarmed Drones charge directly at the squad, while armed enemies can enter a rage state after dropping their weapons.

The developers also showed how enemies can punish players who are downed. Wretches and Drones may attack a fallen Gear at close range, forcing squadmates to intervene. That danger supports the game’s co-op focus and gives the “Never Fight Alone” motto a mechanical role beyond the studio’s walls.

E-holes will work in two ways. Some can still be closed with frag grenades, while larger spectacle versions open across the city, release enemies, damage buildings, and alter the battlefield. The team is using red lighting as a recurring signal for E-holes and danger.

Other enemies shown in the footage included a Corpser, a much larger Boomer, Reavers that can attach themselves to walls, and a bile frog capable of spitting acid. The Boomer carries a new heavy Boomshot and can knock players across the arena when they get too close. The developers also teased a Locust shotgun that fires raw imulsion and melts flesh.

The chainsaw Lancer’s origin takes center stage

One of the demo’s biggest story moments takes place in a grocery store, where the squad encounters Tai Kaliso. The scene draws from established Gears lore while placing Tai into the campaign earlier than the original timeline did.

The sequence also shows how the chainsaw Lancer came to be. With the weapon’s origin tied to a hardware-store chainsaw, the scene gives players the familiar weapon in a new context while introducing a character who remains a major fan favorite.

Maateiwarangi Heta Morris will play Tai Kaliso in the game. The Coalition said the New Zealand actor is an arm-wrestling champion and is bringing Tai’s physical presence, tattoos, and personality to the role.

Marcus and Dom return to the beginning

The demo shows Marcus and Dom before they become the hardened soldiers seen in later games. Marcus wears casual clothes, keeps his bandana, and has not yet received every scar associated with his older appearance. One of those scars is shown forming during the campaign.

The characters will encounter the Locust alongside Megs Carter, a Pendulum Wars veteran from Kalona, and Lucas Reyes, a confident rookie who never reached the front lines before Emergence Day. Together, the four members of Bravo Squad run toward the threat as civilians flee the city.

The Coalition said the campaign will revisit familiar ideas and moments from the franchise without reproducing them exactly. The goal is to show the roots of Gears while building a new story around the first hours of the Locust invasion.
