Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil Movie Will Leave Leon Out of the Story
The director wants to tell an original survival-horror story that follows the games' rules without reusing their most established characters.

Zach Cregger’s upcoming Resident Evil movie will tell a new story set within the world of Capcom’s games rather than trying to recreate the adventures of Leon S. Kennedy or other familiar characters.
Cregger explained the decision during an interview with ScreenRant. He said he does not want to copy the games’ character work because Leon already exists in a form that the movie would struggle to improve.
“I’m not going to be able to improve on Leon,” Cregger said. He added that any actor, hairstyle, or dialogue chosen for the role would still fall short of the version players already know.
Instead, the film will follow original characters living in the same setting as the games. Cregger wants the story to follow the series’ rules while recreating the feeling of playing a Resident Evil game, with the focus placed on survival horror rather than action.
That approach fits with Cregger’s stated view of what gives the games their power. The characters are often injured, short on supplies, and trapped in situations where every step brings another threat. The tension builds as the danger grows, rather than relying on increasingly spectacular stunts.
“What the games do well is they build this incredible atmosphere and this dread and this tension as you progress through these set pieces,” Cregger said. He described the movie as a story built around slow pressure, limited resources, and an escalating sense that the characters are outmatched.
The film’s setting and full cast details have not been provided here, but Cregger’s plan gives the adaptation room to create its own cast without competing directly with Leon, Claire Redfield, Jill Valentine, or the franchise’s other central figures. A recent trailer has already raised questions about the movie’s connection to Raccoon City and the wider series timeline.
Keeping the characters original also lets the movie build suspense around situations that are not already familiar to longtime fans. The goal is a grounded horror story that feels connected to Resident Evil without retelling one of its best-known games.
