Pokémon GO Datamine Points to a New Home for Special Backgrounds

Version 421.0 contains assets suggesting a Buddy Pokémon's Location Card or Special Background could appear on a Trainer's profile.

A feature found in Pokémon GO version 421.0 could give Special Backgrounds a much more visible role. The datamined system appears to let a Trainer use their Buddy Pokémon’s Location Card or Special Background as the background for their profile.

The option is not live, and Scopely has not officially announced it. The files suggest that the background would blend into the existing profile design with a fade, keeping most of the profile text readable. The feature currently appears limited to version 421.0 and later versions.

Special Backgrounds Could Finally Leave Storage

Location Cards and Special Backgrounds have mostly served as collectible details visible on individual Pokémon. A profile option would give Trainers a way to display those items without asking others to inspect their Pokémon storage.

The datamined setup appears to take its visual selection from the active Buddy Pokémon. If that Buddy has a Location Card or Special Background, the same design could carry over to the Trainer’s profile background. That would make rare backgrounds easier for other players to see during regular interactions.

The Idea Has Already Appeared in Community Discussions

The concept also resembles several player proposals shared on Reddit, including discussions about showing Special Backgrounds on Trainer profiles and giving Pokémon backgrounds a more visible purpose. Those ideas can be found in one Pokémon GO discussion, a proposal focused on exclusive backgrounds, and another conversation about Pokémon backgrounds.

That resemblance does not confirm that Scopely based the feature on those posts. It does show that the proposed profile customization addresses a request players have raised for some time.

There Is No Release Date Yet

Because this information comes from a datamine, the feature may change, arrive later than expected, or never reach the live game. The current files only indicate that the system is being prepared for version 421.0 and future builds.

If Scopely moves forward with it, Special Backgrounds would become more than a small detail attached to certain Pokémon. They could become part of a Trainer’s public identity, giving rare catches and event rewards a new way to stand out.
